After watching the first two episodes of the web series Starting From Now, I was immediately drawn and enthralled by this conventional story of a love triangle. It has all the tropes of a love drama, that creates suspense and tension between the characters through the use of some great actors, and also some genuinely stimulating dialogue. I found myself watching the first two episodes, recognising the protagonist and even expecting what was to befall her as she established herself within her narrative world, but still able to empathise with her unique situation and it left me curious to watch more and see what happens next. The fact that Julie Kalceff has created this series centred around three very different female characters, left me intrigued by each one of them, and the themes they represent. We have the self-important bread-winner of the household, the struggling creative partner not quite sure what she is doing, and the young and insecure protagonist who wants to find not only herself but love and acceptance. This story that focuses on different roles that could very well be played by male actors, is so refreshing in the fact that it does not have any male main cast members and that it empowers and challenges the conventions of the female and indeed the lesbian archetype. Real emotion and feeling is injected into this story, to make it accessible to any viewer seeking to immerse themselves in a character driven narrative that addresses real issues of love, trust, insecurity and jealousy.
These introductory episodes have left me awaiting to find out what happens next, with the narrative carefully executing a plot that slowly unfolds to give away each piece of information at a time, to gain the audience’s interest and to invest them into the characters that are being explored on the screen. The drama of relationships is a key feature used by many popular television series’ to draw in audiences, and in this case it has worked on me.
