This is honestly one of the best movies this year. A film with this premise, a group of strippers stepping up their game to milk their sleazy Wall Street clients money to live a luxurious life, could’ve been made a thousand different ways. However, Hustlers sticks to a straight forward narrative structure that is both mature and has more depth, making it a really nicely put together film that makes it more than just about women stripping in front of the camera.
Watching feminist strippers led by J-Lo as head of the pack, drugging and robbing boring middle aged dudes and giving stand out performances makes an incredible film. Jennifer Lopez gives the best performance shes ever given in this film, Ramona is definitely a unique and interesting character, you never forget its J-Lo, but she is very different. Constance Wu again is just getting in smash hit movies one year after the other, I cant wait to see what her next move is. A solid cast that is also filled with celebrities in minor roles such as Cardi B (quite ironic shes in this considering she admitted to doing the exact thing the film is about, yikes), Lizzo, Usher, every bodies coming to the party for this one. When I was watching it I kept thinking this was like The Wolf of Wall Street but set in a strip-club.
The plot is very warm and satisfying, its always going to be a good movie if its about someone going from the bottom and working the way up, and especially if theres lots of money involved. I always wait and get ready for their to be a fallout and where the honeymoon ends and things tend go wrong, its predictable, but it doesnt nessacerily happen the usual way in this film, its kind of little things over time. While the film really engaged me and felt really fun, I think the film began to lose its touch going into the third act and which dwindled on for a bit too long, becoming a bit of a bore.
Hustlers is empowering, fun, dramatic and obviously very appealing. I think the most important thing to come out of this film is that it gives audiences a bit more of a truthful insight to the life of a stripper, and might make you think twice before you judge someone or go into a strip club, these are real people like everybody else and they have lives too.
