As someone who personally loves to people watch and really be present and absorb surroundings, I find Frederick Wiseman’s documentary film style really refreshing and gravitating to watch.
His observational style helps recount everyday people just doing everyday things, untouched and unbothered, people in their own words, intersecting within other people’s worlds. It makes the viewer feel special to share these personal moments, even if it is just a glimpse.
The way shots are composed in to Extreme Closeups, Medium Length shots, Eye level and establishing shots creates a real sense of intimacy and pace, which is something I wanted to focus on when re-editing my video montage, as prior to this my original montage lacked variety.
The original montage content captures The State Library from the external perspective, hence I really wanted to gain more footage to add to the montage from an internal setting/ perspective, exploring the theme of duality/ always having two perspectives. I wanted to emphasise calmness of the quiet library, as if it is the ‘hidden gem’, tucked away from the urban chaos.
The contrast between the quieter interior space and loud, grumbling city centre help to create rhythm, particularly through the juxtaposition of both, heightening and settling the audiences, a tug of the senses.
The opening shot depicts the library window, the soaring ceilings, and a sense of spaciousness. Silhouettes around the dimmed lighting create ambience and a cradled glow, paired with the black and white filter, it creates a real sense of depth and seamlessness.
The steadiness of the shot emulates a pause/ and moment for the audience to take a breath;
the outside settings create the feeling of being confined and overwhelmed in a subtle and observational way, as although it is an exterior setting, simultaneously it feels smothering. I really wanted to create an underlying feeling of warped priorities and how peace is found in solitude.
The outside world can create such an intense sense of tension and discomfort. The closing shot is the same as the other original opening shot, yet it is slightly tilted, this communicates the disparity / lack of continuity between the inside and outside world, a sense of unease and regret.
