Steven, Last Name – Unknown. Aged 28. Originally from Ireland. Came to Melbourne 2 years ago.

Found: in Hosier Lane; loves Street Art; was currently 90 minutes into his Laneway session, described his artwork as ‘evolving’… was not keen on the picture initially as it wasn’t ‘ready’/ completed. He emphasised its ‘in progress’ status and suggested to come back in an hour when it would be ready, I expressed due to time constraints that it was not feasible. He laughed and could tell I was on a mission.

“Time constraints are a friend of no one.” – Steven.

His art depicted Black and white ‘block work’; and he took me through the process, step by step. Very bold and abstract; everywhere the eye meets the wall it becomes more complex.

Steven mentioned he loves working with dimension in an erratic way, moving from left to right, to middle, up and down. Once he finds his groove or his ‘hosier zone’ he becomes completely consumed by the roller, and tends to block out the white noise.

The people of Hosier Lane demonstrate an Introverted nature but in a communal way, while simultaneously demonstrating independence, yet collaboration. It is only once you go there and take a few minutes to absorb the environment that the chaotic walls of lines and graphics can become very calming and intriguing.

Layer is key. Lots of patience; getting comfortable with mistakes; there is no time for Redos here.

This is not Steven’s first-time painting in Hosier Lane, and it certainly will not be his last, the community, networking, and status he has built from a few cans of paint is something he thinks about a lot.

“It’s so Random isn’t it.” – Steven

Steven’s block work ‘in progress’ piece speaks to the Hosier Lane tribe.

 An interpretation for All.
