Color in a film
One of the most important thing in a film was the color, it’s brings lots feelings to audience. For example, one of my favorite Chinese director Zhang Yimou often use strong color contrast to represent different themes in his filmmaking. For example, in the 2002’s famous film “Hero”, despite the use of stunning visual effects, Zhang Yimou also highly utilizes color contrast as his filmmaking style in the movie. The movie “Hero” tells a complex and interesting story about three assassins who sought to murder the most powerful warlord in pre-unified China. In the film ‘Hero’, Zhang Yimou uses different color theme to represent different scenes of the story to provide strong contrasting effect. Hero uses four colors, Red, Green, Blue and White, to tie in four different segments of the story. On the other hand, each of those colors also contains a different story. Green is used for the representation of reminiscing. The blue color is used for the struggle among the three main characters. The White color is highly used during the scenes of the deaths of the main characters. Therefore, the use of different color in different parts of the story provide strong contrast and this can enhance the different mood and environment that the movie wants to deliver to the audience for different parts of the story.
