Week 6 Reflection

Documentary thought

I watched a series about cat documentary named World’s Cat Walk filmed by a Japanese filmmaker, Mitsuaki Iwago. Iwago was shooting a special about cats of the world. His shooting style is kind of an interview, but the most different between other interview documentaries is in his film the interviewee was cat. Iwago communicate with cat on the street, in someone’s home without any conversation with his or her master. I think his documentary are amazing and it’s very attractive me. Normally, an interview documentary with a overlong dialogue and the interviewee narrate their story, as an audience, I think it’s kind of boring.

Iwago’s documentary has the dialogue between him and cats. More specific, it’s the voiceover because cats cannot talk and always miaow. His documentary combine with the smooth and peaceful sound gives audience a relax emotion. So I am thinking, I want to try make a documentary about cat, just like Iwago’s shooting style, using human’s eyes transfer to cat’s eyes, develop a ‘cat’s sense’. Shooting their daily life, their emotion, movement and characteristic. To show audience different cats has their different ability adapt the environment around them and through their acts or emotion, they can brings laugh and happiness to audience.
