Week 4 Reflection – Thursday

Today, Robin introduce the sound device 302 mixer to us, the Sound Devices 302 is a professional, compact 3 channel audio mixer designed to meet the demands of professional film. As I used it before in ‘the scene in cinema’, I am very familiar with use it, through today’s class, it’s more professional for me to learn it, need to practice use it next time when we shooting something.

Then, we went to edit suit did some editing. As last week, we shoot 6×30 seconds ‘abstract ‘shots, we edit each shot then put them together form a story documentary. During we review those shots we took, we found some little problem in there:
1. Exposure- in the first shot, our exposure is too bright I think.
2. Camera- fourth shot, at the beginning, the camera moved a little bit, so we cut it, start it from we walking.
3.Space-space the space in this shot was too empty, next time when we shooting, we need think about that.
During the editing, I found the most interesting thing is your idea can be totally different. Before we shoot those 6 shots, we thought they weren’t become a story, it’s only a true-life documentary, highlight human’s movement, more focus on their feet and their step.  But when we review them in Premiere, we found they are totally can be a story, even it’s can be a comedy documentary. It’s all about how you want to express to audience and how to edit each shot by next shot. Those 6 different shots can make up many different story, it’s totally up to editors how edit them and the relationship between each shot. It can be, the beginning not open with the establish shot, might a MS that two person sited on stairs, then back to establish shot, like that, the film we made totally changed. With adding the music, it’s also a crucial problem to decide what’s the type of your documentary. Such like the work we did, we added Jazz music with lively rhythm, the style of the work totally changed to a comedy, and we tried different types of music, the effect is huge.
So, whatever you shoot in the beginning, the thought might be changed when you edit them, or not.
