What is Direct-cinema documentary? It’s records an ongoing event as it happens, with minimal interference by the filmmaker. (Bordwell, D & Thompson, 2013). Camera always be a spectator, without interferes, not influence the whole process during the shooting, the important is cannot break the reality. Compare with shooting other types of film, I found shooting documentary much more difficult, the reason is I always thinking, what does the audience want to watch, the story in documentary or as a audience, do I really want to watch it? Because I found most of the documentary was kind of boring, without any interesting watch it. After the shoot the 6×30 seconds ‘abstract ’shots, I found something different, the documentary for me was not only about what the filmmaker want to express to audience, but also on how the content evoke audience’s thought, I mean, how to make them feel they live in a real during watch documentary.

 

The practice we much more focus on ‘the characteristic on human’s feet’. As it, I think we did a direct-cinema documentary. We did not get any idea what we will be shoot, it’s a big problem with that, but in the other hand, isn’t it what the documentary like? The idea might not come when you want to shoot something; it’s come what you see at the moment or what your experience. So we set up the camera in front of Building 9 and we quickly discuss the theme in our practice – human feet. Check all the setting on the camera, exposure, white balance and focus, etc.. Then we shoot the first shot with a establish shot, shoot people’s movement and action, when we shooting that shot, we faced the problem that not too much people walking pass by, but, it does not matter, isn’t it? Following next few shots, each shot we just got the idea immediately then shoot it. I am glad what we done finally.

 

During the edit, the combination of each shot makes different story in the end was much fun for me. I never think about that before because when every time you want to shoot a film or a little video, filmmaker must have a specific idea on how to shoot each shot, the framing or the location, even the story. All shooting depend on what’s your story want to express to audience. And, during the editing, editor must allow the rule to edit the film or the scene, otherwise, you will break the plot, it’s will be meaningless. As we didn’t get any plot in our film and we thought it couldn’t be a story, so during the editing, several meaning will come out.

The speed of motion was one of the element influence the shoot. Ordinary action accelerated to comic speed (Bordwell, D & Thompson, 2013). During the editing, we change the speed in our film aims to watch more funny. It’s kind of a feeling like Lumiere brother’s film, the quick movement bring relax and funny emotion to audience.
