MAN REPELLER DISCUSSED

MAN REPELLER : A blog covering fashion, feminism, culture, beauty, wellness, careers and relationships. Everything a female wants to read about and written in an intelligent, honest and hilarious style.

What do I like about it?

It addresses many of my interests, fulfilling my favourite topics to read about and incorporating media (photos etc.) that are aesthetic in my opinion. I also like how the website is targeted to females who are intellects yet love fashion and should see this optimistically and not as a stereotypical weakness.

Why do you think it works well?

It works well due to the websites drive to empower women. To let them be proud and revel in their interests. Read the intellectually and have a good laugh at the honesty in each post. The blog covers all interests and the unique way it is smartly written makes the blog more intriguing and fun. Therefore it works well as it creates a space where readers can become invested in their interests and proud of their taste in hobbies and most importantly it’s a carefree, relaxed, fun environment.

How does the author (or editors, publisher) use authoring, publishing and distributing in the online space to get an audience?

Written by Leandra Medine in 2010, a strong women who realised her love for fashion repelled men due to the way her high/ quirky fashion, came across as intimidating. Decided that most women have the same problem, they’re judged by men about something like love and with Medine’s feminising influence her blog was created to repress this judgment and empower women to celebrate their interests. Therefore Medine transferred her own stories into her blog creating works that women similar to her could invest in and enjoy. This was displayed through her hilarious yet honest writing style, the aesthetic editing of her blog and covering intelligently females interests which is stereotypically seen as ‘the stupid/pointless female hobbies’ and changing readers to view them more positively and proudly.

Soooooo that’s a little insight on one of my favourite blogs Man Repeller, I hope that my blog can carry my unique voice and interest many individuals, just like Leandra has accomplished.

COPYRIGHT AND IP

Copyright is protection for original works, lasting the authors lifetime and an additional 70 year calendar. Work is protected in other countries as well, thanks to international agreements.

Through copyright the author can stop their work from being reproduced, performing/ communicating the work in public or creating adaptations of the work. NOTE it only protects the original form of expression. Normally copyright is owned by the author, employer of the author or someone the author has transferred ownership to. To use someones work you must retain their license.Copyright is available for literary works, dramatic works, musical works and artistic works. Also copyright in non- works include sound recordings, photograph films, television broadcasts and published editions of works.

The Creative Commons license has a looser agenda than copyright. It protects works yet also shares them to others as long as the original author is given credit. Licensing elements consist of: ATTRIBUTION (acknowledge owner), NON-COMMERCIAL (can’t make money from the content only owner can), NO DERIVATIVES (can’t change owners work) and SHARE ALIKE (new creations using owners work need to carry the same license).

Soooooo now I know the rules, regulations to copyright and the positives these two policies can have, including for creative commons being able to use work easily if owner is credited and that through copyright my original ideas can be protected. I hope my readers now understand these licenses importance and access them appropriately, just like I do and can now.

DEFINE BLOG

When asked for the definition of a blog, many answers are given.

A ‘network literacy’, a ‘web- based publication’ or a ‘log kept in the web’. However I would state a blog to be an online edited journal of the authors chosen discourse.

Blogging began in 1997 however wasn’t given the title ‘blog’ until 2003. Making the word ‘blog’ the word of the year in 2004.

Blogging became the ‘Push button for the People’ (2000’s blogger slogan).  A place for consumers to voice themselves with their own personal taste.

Blogging characteristics include:

  • Short in length
  • reverse chronological order
  • uses different media contents e.g.. audio, text, video etc.

Soooooo I’ve learnt the history, definition and basics to form my own blog. I’ll need to exercise my voice with care, use digital technologies and own my online portfolio.

Wish me Luck
