PODCAST GUIDE

In today’s Media 1 lectorial, our guest speaker gave us a brief outline on how to create a basic Podcast. Three important factors need to be addressed these are :

  1. Sound
  2. Voice
  3. Music

Sound meaning Sound effects  aid to the podcast soundscape however only use when necessary don’t add sound effects for the purpose of having a sound effect, add it to create meaning.

Voice meaning the narration in the podcast, the words we hear the announcer and guests speak, portraying the stories the listener hears.

Music aids to the podcast soundscape again to create meaning. However it doesn’t have to layer with voice to evoke the listener, it can be used as  a methodic break for the listener (relaxation time!)

PERSPECTIVE

In this week’s media 10 reading the ideas of perspective and social distance. This can only be explained through the concept of Spatial Positioning (size of frame and perspective). Not only can sizes of shot create distance between the viewer and what is represented based on the image of everyday experiences but so can sound. Sound is differentiated through the 3 stage plan (close/ immediate, middle/support and far distance/ background).

GREEN DAY AND THOSE MEDIA USERS

Sooooo as my boyfriend eats his 8bit burger I thought I’d quickly write up my media 1 initiative post. I was just at Green Day which was the present I got my boyfriend for his 19th birthday (he’s a big green day fan from back in the day) and it was absolutely amazing. I only knew a few of their really big songs such as Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Holiday and American Idiot but I still had so much fun being a part of this experience. However most of the time I wasn’t able to fully appreciate what was happening right infant of me as I had to film clips from the concert for my Networked Media project and I admit guilty that I posted some short film clips on my snapchat story. However I was amazed to see that hardly anybody was on their phones or using video cameras while watching the concert. Normally you can guarantee everyone is on snapchat taking photos or filming. Yet No one was doing this, everyone was living in the moment. How is it that apart from rare instances like the Green Day concert that we are consumed with media and never pay attention to whats happening right in front of us? Can we no longer live in the moment?

Group Project Initial Brainstorm and using the Zoom H2N

In the week 9 media 1 tute, we started it off by watching half of the classes PB3 videos. Next we were assigned into our PB4 project collaborative group projects. In my group we decided to make a brainstorm in order to link our ideas in relation to the theme Attention. As shown in the picture attached we focused on how we have become distracted and bad communicators due to the era we were born in, where everyone is continually swarmed by media and technology (in the process of this brainstorm we found some linking points such as click bait and hyper attention). After this I worked with a partner to learn how to use the mike Zoom H2N. We learnt the correct way to hold the device in order to receive the best possible outcome and how to turn the dials to pick up the best frequency. My partner and I recorded a short trial interview with this mike so we could practice using it and learn how to export the product created. This is attached below.

TEAMWORK HOW TO’S

In the Week 9 Lectorial the theme of group work was consistently reiterated by guest speaker Rachel Wilson. She explained that not only will her speil help us with the upcoming PB4 group projects but for our employability post uni. Work fields are looking for people who like to work collaboratively and enjoy working as part of a team.

You are employable through:

  • Initiative and Enterprise
  • Communication
  • Learning
  • Technology
  • TEAMWORK

People often despise group work due to a level of ‘unfairness’ but what’s important is how you can overcome and fix it, rather than complain.

How to Collaborate effectively:

  • Have Clear Objectives
  • Good Communication
  • Consistency
  • Respect
  • Support
  • Responsibility

Towards the end of the Lectorial Brian Morris informed us all about our PB4’s and also gave insightful tools in order to do well such as using resources such as ‘Library search’ and ‘Library Guide’.

Media Literacy…. in need of a makeover?

In the Media 1 Week 9 Reading ‘ Did Media Literacy Backfire?’ , the importance of understand accurate facts and sources on the internet is argued. The idea that the internet-based media literacy needs to be better, as we are consumed by false facts and false accusations e.g.. ‘Google was trustworthy and Wikipedia was not’. Boyd encourages readers to understand the sources to prove accuracy, however also considers that not everyone agrees on what makes a trusted source e.g.. the conflict between science vs religion. We consider ourselves our own ‘masters’ and from a young age are introduced to the idea of ‘being sole proprietors of knowledge’. We can dismiss experts and turn towards what the public says on the internet as it’s at our fingertips, accumulated with the idea of ‘Public Trust’. Although this idea of doubt becoming a tool is what we are informed by, Boyd proclaims that we must undergo a cultural change in order to address fake news and improve media literacy by enabling others to hear different perspectives and not rely solely on prior incentives.

PB 3 problems addressed

So in this week 8 media 1 tutorial, the lesson has been dedicated to our PB3 projects. I’ve completed every part of the project however my video isn’t exporting properly so today I sat down with Brian to solve this problem. We tried exporting it with different source features e.g.. H 2.624 and ticking the maximum render box. However after the lag hour wait for the export, it resulted with the same problematic outcome. The format of the shots were all different sizes and didn’t fit the frame. We then closed the project and made a new test one where we just imported a short clip with the correct settings and exported it to see if it exported correctly, this worked! So I went back onto my original edited piece that wasn’t working properly and realised that the zoom level for the entire project was set to 100% instead of fit. So I changed it to fit and every shot had changed into a smaller frame size, so I went through and changed the scale to 100 on each individual shot clip. Then exported this rendered copy and it worked!!!!! I am feeling so relieved now, knowing I don’t need to start again from scratch in order to fix this issue :))

THE AUDIENCE AND THE EDITING PROCESS EXPLORED

In the week 8 media lectorial the key ideas covered where ideas of audience from Brian and the editing process from a guest speaker.

Audiences can be either passive or active (media effects theory) and the ideas of mass culture in relation to mass audience.

Firstly who cares about having an audience?

  • Advertisers
  • Commercial broadcasters, cable networks
  • Production houses and independent program makers
  • Government policy makers
  • Social scientist/ psychologist

And that when considering TV audience that programs are designed to speak to a national audience.

Audiences nowadays multitask while viewing, watch on many different devices and are now enthused in binge watching.

Yet a new wave of audience members are the FANDOM

  • they are considered out of control, obsessive, irrational
  • online fan communities
  • activists
  • ‘fannish modes of engagement’

When talking about the Editing Process:

The most important thing to do is have your filing system downtick. Make many folders for audio, film etc. and save each work exported into the correct assigned folder this just makes your work organised and therefore easier to source.

The 3 step Process

  1. Assembly
  2. Rough Cut
  3. Fine Cut

The fandom

This week’s Media 1 reading explores the Harry Potter conference Infinitus held in Orlando. I myself am not a Harry Potter fan so I struggled to understand and connect with this reading however had a an outsider perspective to how it was important to our course. The reading reflects the strong Fandom this story has generated, evoking a sense of community. Displaying that this book series and film series have inspired and pleased this fandom. However it also causes many problems in there eyes as sometimes film cannot do the book justice or even the story cannot do the readers ideas of Hogwarts justice. Showing that the purpose of film and books is to please their audience, however they can never fully please the individual hardcore fanatic.

PB3 Interview DOCO

Xavier DOCO

‘ Xavier Romanin- Green aged 19 has moved from the lazy seaside town Beaumaris to the hustle and bustle of Kew. However this small change has impacted his high school experience dramatically as it made forming friendships harder yet overcoming obstacles easier through his resilience. His struggles with firsts football was an obtruding problem that impacted his character yet with the help of friends, family and pure determination he had overcome this hurdle. Concluding that although it was tough, this experience shaped him into the person he is today.’

The most problematic aspect of this product was defiantly the exporting process. I struggled to export the content into the format I wanted to clearly and easily display it on Youtube. Also finding an appropriate and well suited song to be played in the background of the clips was very hard considering the music has to be copyright free. I initially struggled to condense the material I had as I had so many video clips that I had no idea how I wanted to reveal my interviewee’s story and what to include/ not include. However I  eventually produced the product in a simple and effective way that dictated Xavier’s story, proclaiming his strong message he wanted to share. What I thought was successful was the layering of different media within the film, therefore the dull mid-shot footage of Xavier isn’t shown for the entire 2 minutes, it’s broken up and more intriguing with the inclusion of sound score, still images, other filler video footage content, audio clippings and interviews from friends of Xavier’s. The video’s narrative sequence was also well done as it clearly announced to the viewer who Xavier is and reveals his story and what he has taken from it in a linear progression. I think also choosing Xavier as my subject was a smart move as I am well acquainted with him, therefore before the interview commenced and I was at the stage of writing interview questions I already had some idea of what to ask him, as I knew how I wanted this product to go. I learnt through this task of creating a portrait through film that you should go above and beyond when it comes to content. Always have too much content when producing documentaries as this will help you form many different ways to tell the story and it also ensures you have enough footage in the editing process.  Also when it comes to the interviewing stage make sure you have directed questions that are open- ended to ensure the best possible outcome for your product and for the interviewee to answer with justice. Through the making process I learnt that it is always a good idea to overlay different media in order to make your final product more interesting (no one wants to be staring at one mid- shot for the products duration), always keep the audience on their toes, through using different shots and including other aspects such as sound, images etc. Also give yourself a week to acquire all the footage and a week to edit the footage as these projects are a timely matter and just incase something goes wrong, you still have time to fix it without the need to stress. Most importantly I learnt that whenever you produce material make it interesting for the reader through different media contents and leave them with a strong message they can remember your product by (always teach your audience a lesson).

Attached is a screenshot of my completed sequence in Premiere Pro.
