DOCO analysis – ‘The story of Diana’, Rebecca Gitlitz 2017

I chose this documentary based on it’s theme of memory and bringing to light the tragedy of loss while also discussing the importance and love for something (in this case for a person). This documentary is about Princess Diana so is quite different to what we are making about Suttons which is a building and business.

However, I also see some overlapping themes. I wanted to find a documentary presented in an emotional and personal way, where the director is wanting the audience to feel sympathetic toward the subject but also connected with the interviewees and feel their loss. As Diana is now deceased it is also heavily centred around the memory of her and what she meant to others, like my and Jacks depiction of Suttons as a place that meant so much to so many.

Something I like about this documentary is the use of multiple interviews. I think using multiple interviews helps reinforce your argument or the feel you’re trying to convey and gives it a sense of substance. Along with these interviews they used different people who had different ways of knowing Diana, you had her brother as the main interview brining his personal and emotional side of the story as the person who knew her best. But along with this they also had professionals in the media industry and historians to give the story further context and substance. For our film we will definitely use multiple interviews to do the same however, we will be unable to use as many as we’d like due to the time restriction of the film.

They’re use of found footage and media is something I also really like and hope to use in our film. I think as this film and also ours is dealing with the past and focussing on memory and the storytelling of those memories; it’s crucial to use found media to help show the memory rather than just tell it.

I focused my analysis on the opening sequence of this documentary because it’s something I’m unsure at this stage of how to present. I actually feel this sequence is useful when looking at our own. I like how they started the film with an interview of the brother setting up the story but no giving any details, encouraging the audience to want to know more. And then moving straight into old photographs and the introduction of music to add to the emotional effect and help the audience connect to Diana and grow their sympathy for her. This then was interspersed with multiple interview shots of many different people commenting on how beautiful, amazing and powerful she was. I think the beginning with interview and moving into found media might be a good way to approach our film and then move onto shots of the building within Sturt St. Ballarat to create context and give some historic background.
