In the end we really tried to take Kim’s advice on board and rearranging our film, especially in the second half really did help the film flow and make more sense. Once we had done this we also really tried to incorporate music throughout the film and display the fun, energetic and inclusive vibe of Suttons House of Music. We also really wanted to use the event posters in the film somewhere so added a little pan of a bunch of them.
FINAL CUT CLASS PRESENTATION
This week we showed final cut to the class and got some really nice feedback. I was unsure how as a critical audience they would feel about the low quality found footage that we used throughout the film to display the live performances. However, to my delight we received feedback that the low quality didn’t matter because it was displaying memory and allowing the audience to step back in time and get a feel for the business which is exactly what we wanted. Another positive piece of feedback was the great use of music which really gave the feeling of a music documentary. I think this was a good choice to sew throughout as it’s important to the music theme of the film but also great for engagement. Another audience member enjoyed the use of more than one interview member, especially because they back up what Dani is saying rather than it all being from her point of view. The multiple interview subjects give what Dani is saying substance but in a personal way. And what I really loved to hear was that some people really felt an emotional connection to the story.
One piece of feedback given was in regards to the title. It was suggested that Protect Suttons would be a better suit than Music in the walls because they felt that is something that would hook them in to watch more. We haven’t changed our title as we felt it was a little late and still like the original however, if we had more time and were going to take this film further it’s definitely something I would consider. When watching your film up on a big screen especially in front of others it’s easy to notice all the mistakes or areas that could be improved, but while we were watching I looked at the faces of the audience members and saw their expressions and engagement with our film. It made me feel really good and in the end I’m happy with what we’ve achieved.
