I recently watched the movie Limitless starring Bradley Cooper as a writer going nowhere in life until he discovers ‘NZT’, which is basically adderall x 1,000,000, a drug that unlocks 100% of a humans brain power. Once he takes it he becomes the perfect version of himself, able to complete any task in the best and most efficient way.
I really liked this film and the way Bradley Cooper is narrating at the same time as being the main character. I think that having little sections of narration over parts of the film from the main character really gives the viewer the sense that they are being told a story. I really like this technique as you feel like you are relating more to the protagonist, and it feels more personal, like the movie was made for you. The use of special effects also takes the viewer along for the ride into the hallucinations and time warping effects the drug has on the user, really helping put the audience into the characters mindset.
I thought Limitless was very entertaining and Bradley Cooper did a great job playing a character in two very different states, one hopeless and unmotivated and failing, and the other the ‘perfect version of himself’. The movie also brings to light a lot of issues surrounding our modern society’s ‘pill-popping’ nature, looking for a quick and easy fix if life isn’t working out exactly as planned.
