The pitch was a good way to get my idea out there and inform the people of what exactly they could expect on the big screens at the end of the semester. The pitch was a crucial way to get my ideas circulating but also receive some feedback about whether my documentary was heading in the right direction.
The general feedback with the pitch was that two micro documentaries unless they were very short and concise between 1-2 minutes would be a hard task to film. The task of moulding two adults subjects into the one film also was a bit of a concern for my peers.
I tend to agree, the two subject outlook for the adult micro documentary has the potential to compare two perspectives very well and compare and construct but logically it could be tough to get similar responses. Their lives are very different but they do have interrelations on many levels which helps the strength of the comparisons. However, the task on filming then editing two longer than three minute micro documentaries was a task the pitching audience thought was too great.
Long term the two micro documentaries could be achieved for the Aussie Hands Foundation, however in the short term Julie McNally and/or Mike Bromley’s story (s) will be my main focus. If Julie or Mike’s story are strong enough to have their own micro documentary feature then I will consider just focusing on one subjects story. That merit will clearly be determined by the end of the filming process with the two subjects.
All in all, the audience like the idea for the micro documentaries, like the fact I will be using close ups of the hands and experimenting with the hand differences in a variety of angles and lighting to present their amazing difference.
The morning routine idea will be something I will continue to experiment with once I film the final interviews and shots but for the current time the story structure will be centered around the morning routine, using the hands in a unique way then spanning from their methods to stories of their lives and struggles and triumphs they’ve had with their hand differences.
