Tactical Urbanism

Tactical Urbanism refers to the umbrella term used to describe a collection of low-cost, temporary changes to the built environment, usually in cities, intended to improve local neighbourhoods and city gathering places.

“Small scale actions serving a larger purpose”

Tactively is short term action for long term change. Designed to improve the quality of public life for the benefit of a city and it’s residents.

Examples of tactical urbanism include but are not limited to:

-defencing

-depaving

-introducing food carts/trucks

-guerilla gardening

-pop up retail/cafes

Lentara draws on the notions and ideals of tactical urbanism by aiming to improve, support and enhance the lives of those in need especially within urban areas. For instance, Jeff Jones idea for what he refers to as a ‘shower bus’ will allow homeless people in Melbourne to have access to shower facilities on a regular basis. Although a simple notion, I believe this will essentially have a domino effect of benefit for the homeless and the wider city of Melbourne. When a person suddenly had the opportunity to care for themselves and look after one of our most basic human needs-hygiene-they in turn are able to feel more in control of their lives. I believe it will give these people a sense of having more power in their situations and more pride within themselves. The result could be anything from the absence of illness to the motivation to apply for work and get off the streets.
