I have chosen to reflect on the two different edits of the ending sequence of A Model Son. The video above is the older version that we have shown in our very first screening. When we were first editing the documentary, we noticed that there were too many interview clips, which is why we decided to include the sequence of Kevin playing the guitar. In addition, it also shows the audience another aspect of Kevin, allowing them to get to know him better.
Right after the guitar sequence, we let the video keep on rolling up to the part where Kevin saying “What should I do?” The reason why we included this clip is because we wanted to emphasise Kevin’s feelings regarding the situation with his parents. It is indeed a short and simple statement but it is enough to depict how lost Kevin feels.
However, one of the feedbacks we received for our documentary was regarding the ending sequence. They pointed out that it made no sense for the guitar scene to be there because Kevin is a model, not a musician, therefore it was not very fitting. Instead, we were suggested to put the sound from the interview over the sound of the guitar playing. Our group took it into consideration and once we’ve changed it, we realised it certainly is the better option. The video below is an edited version of the older one and it is the sequence we have chosen for our final documentary.
The guitar sound certainly made his interview answers more impactful and it is a better transition compared to the abrupt cut we had in our original sequence. In the newer version, we added the photos from the photoshoot and included a montage similar to the montage at the start. Personally, I thought this ties the whole documentary together nicely compared to the original sequence. It also helps prove to the audience that Kevin, despite his circumstances, is serious about his career. Our group also liked the clip of Kevin laughing in the photoshoot that was at the end of the original sequence. We thought it was a good way to end the documentary to lift up the previously heavy atmosphere which is why we decided to include it again in our final sequence.
