The group I had with Isabella and Natalie is truthfully one of the best groups I have ever had. A Model Son would have ceased to exist had it not been for everyone’s help, I now understand that it undoubtedly takes a team to create a documentary. I can safely say that we had no communication problems within our group and that we all had our own initiatives to do our share of the work.
The main issue that we experienced from the very start was that we started filming our documentary way after the other groups started filming. This is because Kevin unfortunately had prior appointments and he was not in Melbourne during the Easter break. This meant that we had to quickly edit our rough cuts right after we filmed and spend more time and effort in a short period of time. Thankfully, our group was able to frequently meet and edit the documentary together. Another issue we experienced was when we realised that we did not have enough B-roll footage. It was unfortunately raining on the day we organised the interview and hence, the situation was not ideal. However, we managed to schedule another shooting session with Kevin and have gotten everything done on time. I think the only other issue we had was technical problems and even then we managed to get through them together as a team.
Personally, I think what makes a good collaborator is communication. I was initially very nervous because I have had group assignments in the past where no one wanted to meet up because of their personal schedules and we all did our work individually. As expected, it did not turn out well. I don’t think it is possible for a group project to be successful without proper communication. When there are any contradicting opinions, everyone must respect each other’s perspectives and talk through their problems calmly. Moreover, nobody should be shy to ask for help. When there is something that someone doesn’t understand, they should not be embarrassed to ask fellow group members to ensure that everyone is on the same page.
