With a camera in hand, our group of three wandered around the campus, hoping for ideas to strike us. Since none of us had any professional experience in using a DSLR, it was a little worrying in the beginning. However, after playing around with the camera and a few test shots, we finally figured out the settings and were ready to take some photographs.
The first shot I have chosen is of this mother and daughter outside of the RMIT Building 8. Delores casually started a conversation with the mother and we found out that this is actually the family’s first year in Melbourne. The mother talked about how she needed to pick up her daughter from kindergarten because the teachers mentioned how she was acting up in class, probably because she is still trying to get used to the environment here. Unfortunately, at one point the little girl got her index finger stuck in between the steel bench and so she started crying. As her mother was helping her, I decided to quickly capture this moment.
The second picture that I have picked is this one of the three high school girls. They were initially chatting and eating their lunch but that quickly changed when we approached them to ask if we could take some pictures. As you can all see, they started playing their phones and tried their best to hide their faces from the camera. It was a little disappointing because what they were doing before looked very candid and engaging whereas now it just looks awkward.
The last picture I have chosen is of this man on the phone who was waiting for a friend from Switzerland. and actually, there is a brief story behind this shot. We took the picture first before we asked for his permission due to our previous encounter with the school girls. We realised that the subject is typically unable to act natural when they know their picture is being taken which is why we opted for this method instead.
