Directing Offbeat …again

So last Thursday was my second time on the set of “Offbeat” and I went in ‘thinking’ I knew a little more than last week. However as I have now realised the whole learning process is forever growing and there will always be more and more to learn. For the second episode I was directing again and felt really quite nervous to take control and be confident in what I was doing. As a whole we all made a few mistakes such as graphics were playing up, we had a few audio problems so myself and the assistant director couldn’t hear what was being said this made it extremely difficult for us to follow along.

Nina, our producer of the show brought in a guy who has directed lots of RMITV shows in numerous interview-like forms. He was a great help who taught me to mainly focus on finding a rhythm when changing the shots. He says the best form to an interview is when it’s not rushed and tells a story of those being interviewed. He also taught me to observe the body language of the interviewers and interviewees, and start trying to know who will talk next so that way the camera would be on the person about to speak.

Over the course of the show I made a few mistakes, I have learnt to not chop and change the shots so quickly and if I accidentally put to air the wrong shot don’t immediately change it just stick with it for a while. Another thing is to keep calm when directing a live show, the best way to create a smooth show is to maintain a clear head and be able to control the room. Next time I direct a show I will go in with a better skill set and confidence to ensure everyone is on time and ready to go. Last week we needed more time to set up so we were very rushed in starting, this set us off to a rocky start. However we are all learning and I feel that the more we do these shows the more the crew as a whole will find a rhythm and be able to get through our set up in a quick and efficient manner.

Im really enjoying this process of learning about behind the scenes, I find it really exciting and hope to continue to expand my knowledge and experience along the way. Next week we are changing roles and I am a camera operator, this will be a definite change of perspective for me, from being in control of the shots and how they look to being told what shot to create, Im excited however to try something new.
