Media audit post1

I think it is important for today’s youth to have the ability to think independently and make things with their hands because these skills can help us solve problems better, think creatively, and improve our analytical and problem-solving skills in three different activities to practice our ability.

In the first class of real-world media on Tuesday, we start by making our own crafts such as folding different shapes of frogs, boxes, cranes, etc, with paper. Then we do the second activity which is to shoot 30 horizontal short videos and finally edit these 30 videos into a 2 minutes video. Through the first origami activity and second activity, I chose to fold a frog but I didn’t succeed because some of the steps were a bit difficult. Although I didn’t succeed, the process is more important than the result (Ingold and Tim 2010:91). Activities are a way to explore knowledge, not only will promote brain development activities can also enhance the training of our observation, creativity, imagination.

Moreover, we also have another activity on Thursday which is a brainstorming session with the media. We have expanded on the topic of media to include many things that are media related such as movies, news, information and so on. Thus, brainstorming is not only a clash of ideas but also a form of developing our creativity and imagination(Klee 1973). In short, we will gradually develop the habit of observing things around us carefully and grasp the characteristics of things more and more precisely. Although I found origami a little difficult but I learn to think about making things and I am very enjoy this three activity.

A5 pt2 Studio Review

1. From my studio, I choose two students’ media works, first one is Shanshan Gao’s short film which is called ‘External love’. The content of this story appeals to me because it is a love story between a robot and a human and it also combines modern, future technology themes. In the age of Internet, the topic of artificial intelligence is hot and most young people like to watch love movies including me. Her “proof of concept” project proved the movie story world she wanted to show, and I could clearly understand her idea of combining romance film and future technology. A sci-fi movie like her will have a lot of imagination space, which will make the audience have more to watch and make the merchants want to promote this movie. However, as a new type of filmmaker, making science and technology films may give her great challenges. For example, she needs to be familiar with how to use multiple software to make sci-fi scenes.

Next one is Amanda Kezia Tanderitz’s short film which is called ‘Why’. Her film and I have a little similar so that I am interested in it, her movie content is about the contradiction between mother and daughter, the same is my films have a fragment have similar points such as movie will I mention the problem of the boy and his father but the problem is not my film. Her films would shoot with multiple shots, some of which I had not learned before, which made me learn a new knowledge after seeing them. Her “proof of concept” is also a good proof of her ideas, and I think a relationship movie is a good place to start for a novice filmmaker. I think they are very successful in using their proof of concept short film to justify their long narrative or idea. I learn a lot from their projects, and one of the things is to have more ideas about writing scripts, or ways to justify my long form ideas in other forms.

We are constantly learning new knowledge to acquire new skills to apply to our own work.

2.Form other studio ‘The power of the cut’ discusses the sound design and music of the work through narrative, documentary and commercial editing styles which also is the key idea of the studio. And then uses these three different editing styles as a portfolio to showcase their skills as an editor. In this studio, students can practice their cooperation ability because they need to shoot and direct with their actors, and they will share their personal experiences with each other. Finally, it is for the creation of their own products to promote. The first work is Dani atherton’s ‘Falling in love with a perfect stranger’, his editing series are Enchant, ToTheMax and Jewell, I also made the project by combining the form of commercial advertisements and documentaries. Second project is Emily cox’s work. Her content is quite interesting. She uses the form of narration and documentary to record the story of Ashe’s commitment to the aerobics movement for the advertising of aerobics. I think these projects are a big project, and they need to use three different editing styles to present them to the audience in their videos. I think it is very difficult for me to edit the video. It is a complicated thing because it takes time for me to patiently cut the video content that I want to shoot. However, they show their works to the audience in this studio, which shows that they have their own unique editing style and editing skills.

Assignment4 Question3&4 Pathway to Audience

Question3

Pathway to Audience (word count: 397)

The target audience for my proof of concept and long form idea are three types of people. They may like other movies like horror and comedy because their personal preferences are different. First of all, my ‘primary’ audience are teachers and parents, whose ages range from 25 to 50 years old. Because the subject matter of my film is about combating bullying in schools, it is also an educational film, so my ‘primary’ audience is very concerned about this issue. If parents do not set a good example for their children in the home, but allow them to grow up in a violent environment, they will slowly become mentally unbalanced and go out to bully others. Next, my ‘secondary’ audience are students are middle school students whose age range is about 12 to 15 years old. It is inevitable that adolescents will have some thoughts about each other, such as they will dislike a classmate and bullying her and then ostracizing her.

I think my ‘primary’ audience would like to watch educational movies in a specific way and in a specific place. for instance, teachers will show such movies in class when teaching educational issues and prevent and stop such violence.Giroux described popular movies as a form of “public pedagogy e a visual technology that functions as a powerful teaching machine.” (Giroux, 2002) In this way, teachers can also motivate students to learn through movies.

I know my target audience likes to look at their phones so I post my proof of concept on social media applications such as Youtube, Instagram, TikTok and so on. I think projects with realistic themes are more likely to find an audience and people like to see other people in embarrassing, scary or difficult situations. I can post on many social media outlets or participate in film festivals, but the only way to reach the tens of thousands of viewers who will watch my work is if the film has the dimension and breadth of distribution. I can also create a topic that the audience likes and then they choose the video and share it, recommend it and then create a topic and a lot of republication is the main task of my film distribution. Each platform actually carries a different audience group, maximizing my exposure, and they all continue to expand my film’s audience, so that I continue to benefit.

Question4

Reflection (word count: 396)

I want my final work to be broadcast through social networking platforms and then show it to the audience. The audience will know exactly what my ‘proof of concept’ is about to convey one of the studio’s main concerns, such as a film where my main concern is a simple plot line and narrative exposition for the majority audience to understand and accept.

If I’m going to continue to work on proof-of-concept projects the core of what I want to improve is to add some interest to my projects. For example, I could have my protagonist who has dyslexia but who has a talent for fine art and drawing. Contemporary young people like to see hot things, so I need to make my works more interesting and selling points to make my project more successful.

Video art has inherent commercial attributes, and it pays more attention to the commercial value and entertainment function of products. Since the trend of the market and the public’s likes and dislikes determine the survival of my works, I must pay close attention to the market demand and the audience’s aesthetic taste changes before entering the life and the market.

I think my proof of concept can effectively ‘prove’ the concept of my long-form narrative concept. Because, It allows the audience to have an imaginary space when watching.

I think my concept reflects social problems such as campus bullying, which can also help teachers and parents to prevent students after watching it. All sectors of society hope that movies can become a more effective means of education and become the main way and important way for people to express their feelings and values.

The main challenge for me in this studio is that the content of my films is difficult to reach across all ages. However, my content is related to education so there will still be a certain audience of teachers, students and parents, and maybe other people will find it a little boring. When I am creating works, I not only need to grasp the truth, goodness and beauty in the works, but also need to carry out the correct guidance of three views. On the one hand, it is to inherit and carry forward the culture, on the other hand, it is to set up people’s cultural confidence and cultivate people’s cultural consciousness, and enrich people’s entertainment life.

Assignment 2 by Luyi Ye

1. Development of your Long Form Narrative Idea You need to give a snapshot of your long form narrative idea by providing the following: Title Format (eg. feature film, TV series) Genre Main Character bio – who is your protagonist and what will their journey be? Do they have a goal to achieve? An obstacle to overcome? What will they learn? How will they grow? One paragraph synopsis – use Screen Australia guide here (Links to an external site.) Development research – using at least TWO scholarly references (in RMIT Harvard referencing style) discuss how you plan to develop your idea, what development methods might you use? (eg. how will you develop the story world? The characters? The structure? (minimum 400 words for this development research section)

Title format :feature film- ‘locker room’

Genre Main Character bio-

Anna dina and Will hubb are my protagonists, their journey will happen in high school when students are in adolescence but this story is negative turned positive. The obstacles they need to overcome are the psychological trauma caused by the domestic violence of their origin and the release of the psychological barriers. They will learn that their mental health is important and that they are against bullying in schools. A person is meant to live for themselves and should not be led astray by their family. They will help each other through the two sides, learn to think for each other and finally out of the gloom so as to grow.

One paragraph synopsis-

Will, in his adolescence, is often scolded by his father, causing him to have psychological problems, and he tries to bully his classmates in high school to gain psychological comfort. Anna is often teased by Will because of her fat appearance, such as throwing her stationery box into the trash, verbally attacking her, and ostracizing her classmates. But Anna is not only a mature girl but she never feels bad because of such a small conflict, she thinks more about sympathy for Will’s suffering and decides to help him out. Anna then becomes a light in Will’s life, and he becomes a part of the fight against bullying in school and is sorry for all his previous actions.

Development research-

I planned to portray Anna as a positive character and portray her as a mature girl, with positive energy and a positive outlook on life. This is in contrast to Will’s character, who is the antagonist. Anna follows Will home secretly because she wants to know if there is an abuser in Will’s family who is constantly bullying her. Smith(2018)suggests that, “bullying can also obviously be verbal , insults, threats, demeaning comments.” Even if will would insult her appearance, throw her stationery box into the trash or even knock Anna down with his shoulder. She doesn’t feel embarrassed by the bullying either. She thinks more about helping the abuser turn into an appealing person. She is not a saint, but she does what she can to help. She took pity on Will after she knew that he would be regularly beaten by his father. While you have one flaw or another, you may also have a trait that others envy.

Anna would often talk to Will alone, but Will would always avoid it, but everyone is not a bad person inside, they just need someone to guide them to be themselves. Until one day it was raining and Will couldn’t go home without an umbrella, Anna held the umbrella with her left hand and took him by the hand with her right hand and said she would take him home. At that moment, the world seemed to stand still, and he was very grateful to have someone who understood him. It was also that conversation that changed Will for the better. As Nassem states that, “you can use the ‘Empathetic understanding’ strategy to allow students, pupils and staff to enhance their understanding of each other’s perspectives and to understand the underlying causes of their behavior. underlying causes of their behavior.” So Anna found an opportunity to get Will and her to learn more about each other in order to fight school bullying.

The ending of this story needs to be positive because school bullying is becoming more and more common nowadays, and it is a nightmare that is weighing on the minds of many parents and children.

2. Development of your Proof of Concept Idea You need to give a snapshot of the proof of concept project idea that speaks to your long form narrative idea by providing the following: Title (this can be different from your long form idea title) Format (eg. short film, web series) Main Character – will you use the same protagonist? If so, how is this character similar? What is their journey in the proof of concept? How is it similar to the long form idea whilst still being its own shorter standalone character journey? One paragraph synopsis – use Screen Australia guide here (Links to an external site.) (this isn’t the same synopsis as your long form idea)

Title- short film ‘Alone’

Main Character-

Lucy lene is a self-centered personality who likes to be alone and does not like to make friends.

Linda isela is a transfer student who has a very cheerful personality.

The main character changes from a girl who likes to be alone and has low self-esteem to an outgoing person who loves life. It shares the same idea as long from in that it is a call to action against bullying in schools.

One paragraph synopsis-

Lucy grew up in a poor family but excelled in her studies, so she saved her family a lot of trouble. Although she was ostracized by some girls who were jealous of her grades and good looks, she has always preferred to be alone and is used to this life. In fact, she is longing for a change. She sometimes feels too lonely to have a friend to talk to until Linda comes along. Lucy is transformed into a positive girl who no longer has low self-esteem.

3. Justification and Rationale for your Proof of Concept Idea (400-500 words) Why did you choose this format for your proof of concept idea? Why do you think this short narrative idea will ‘prove’ the concept for your long form idea? What about your long form idea do you think might be challenging to pitch and sell to producers? How does your proof of concept project show that the challenges of your long form idea are viable, achievable, and exciting?

I choose this format for your proof of concept idea because it’s simpler than a TV series to express my central idea. I think this short narrative idea will ‘prove’ the concept for your long form idea because my subject matter revolves around an idea to write my story, such as my short narrative idea and long form idea both are school bullying so their concepts are consistent.

One of the biggest problems in contemporary society is bullying in schools, and if I were to write a film about this kind of issue I think I would need to consider a lot of issues and face a lot of challenges. My subject matter needs to be realistic and more heartfelt and positive to make people more inclusive. I don’t think the subject matter should be too gory because it’s easy to get carried away with the psychological issues of teenagers so I need to think carefully about the content part of the subject matter. They may think that without the gore there is no point but I think it needs to be mainly healthy content. So my long form idea might be challenging to pitch and sell to producers. My poof of concept project show that the challenges of my long form idea are viable, achievable, and exciting. Through the experiences of the main character, my film urges all young people and parents not only to reject “bullying”, but also not to be “spectators” or “accomplices” and to stand up for themselves. The film has a clear stance and a clear message, which serves as a good warning and is thought-provoking. Bullying in schools is an act of bullying, verbal humiliation and even assault between peers. However, my story is also about the psychological state of the perpetrator who turns from an abuser to an advocate for everyone to speak out against bullying in schools. It will also resonate with schools to make them more vigilant against such bad behaviour. Through my poof of concept project, I have conveyed positive energy to the whole society. I really hope that our compulsory education will not only focus on grades, but also on the development of children’s mental health. Parents and teachers should teach their children to reject bullying in a more correct way, and to be the main messenger of bullying. In particular, parents should focus more on how they can be better parents and have better interaction and care with their children. My poof of concept project can mapped out many issues which are school bullying, family reasons, mental health and so on. One person cannot somehow be the perpetrator of violence so every aspect of life is relevant.

4. Reflection (300 words) You will need write a reflection on the exercise highlighting your learning, and challenges you had to overcome. What did you learn from this exercise? (get specific and use examples) What were the challenges you overcame in completing the assessment? How has this exercise started you reflecting on your career as a filmmaker, and your long form idea moving forward?

Making films is a huge part of modern day society, It allows us to be expressive, tell a story or communicate information. We need filmmakers to carefully piece together a directors vision and produce eye-capturing, and beautiful films. Without filmmakers, we would have no movies, TV programmes, documentaries or music videos. There would be no way for the news to run and, as a result, no way for us to remain connected to each other, and to the outside world.

In this exercise, I learned how to think and write a ‘long term’ idea or ‘the proof of concept’. I don’t think it’s hard to get an idea in my head. It’s hard to turn that idea into a story. The main content of the story can only be an idea and then write around it. For example, Krista is a Proof of Concept for feature film ‘Beast Beast’ (2020), the example is week 3 class1 page12, we can know the main idea of the feature film ‘Beast Beast’ is Krista who is not only the heroine but also the main clue throughout the movie. I think it teach me how to write ‘the proof of concept’. Although it’s a little hard to think about a particular event because our brain can’t focus on one event and may have many ideas, this exercise made me focus more on one idea and extend that idea into a better story. I think as a filmmaker, I need to think more than others, such as how to come up with a good story and then how to develop the story content and not stray from the topic. When I am a film producer, I need to analyze and formulate a complete long form idea. I also need to learn to use video editing software to organize digital footage of TV shows, movies, music videos, documentaries, or news and sporting events, work with producers to determine the overall vision of the production, and discuss shooting and editing techniques to improve each scene. How to be a good filmmaker is a great knowledge, which requires not only independent thinking ability but also creative and analytical ability. Although my summary experience is not much, this exercise can help me to have a deeper understanding of ‘the Proof of Concept’ and my long form idea.

Assignment 1 for the proof of concept- Luyi Ye

1.Write about what you want from this studio.

We had to come up with a long-form idea, and then find a way to boil that idea down into a short “proof of concept”project that proved we could build a whole story, characters.I think this studio has given us a better understanding of what the film and television industry is all about and it has given us “proof of concept”film examples to do practical activities to learn the content of this course. We’ll look at many examples of the film, explore the short film, and discuss its central concepts and themes to the audience. The studio uses creative ideas to write our own scripts, genres, characters, etc.

I want to be a filmmaker or a post-editing person, actually I’d rather be a post-editing person because I’ve studied video editing in previous classes. I think this technology is very important for me, because now we media is a hot topic, making videos is the young people in today’s society like to work, but I also like it. In fact, I think it takes a lot of brain to be a filmmaker, because I am not good at writing and my imagination is not rich enough. Maybe I don’t watch enough movies, and I don’t think too much about every movie I see. So I want to learn more about the concept of movies from this class. One of my little aspirations is to create a “proof of concept” that will help me figure out if my idea can be developed into an interesting and engaging microfilm. I think this course will help me see a lot of hit movies or “proof of concept” videos. I can also watch movies on Netflix, YouTube and other social media platforms. Watching other people’s works can not only help me absorb knowledge and discover filmmaking skills, but also help me develop filmmaking style and visual effects.

2.Outline your career goals as a filmmaker.

As a new filmmaker, my five-year plan in the future is to make my short films loved by the audience and get a lot of fans in the platform I release. If they can be included in the ranking films of Hollywood, it will be better. (But it’s a big dream to be in Hollywood’s sights no matter what the number is or to be loved by a lot of people in Asia. Or if the movie you want to make becomes a hit in your own city, which is easier to achieve.) What I need to do is to combine my favorite types of stories according to the content that the public is interested in to become the most popular short film at present. There are some realistic steps that I might take to achieve this as an emerging filmmaker:

First of all, I need to create a complete story, characters, setting, characters don’t have to be too complicated but I need to communicate one of the main concepts of my story clearly to the audience. Second, I had studied video editing before so I thought I could work as a producer and post editor, and then I needed to find another six or seven people. For example, the camera, two or three actors, the scene recorder, the lighting. Third, one of the things that producers have to think about is money. For an emerging filmmaker, there is a shortage of funds, because I have not received outside remuneration for my films, so I need to think about the cost of each scene when my funds are limited. I can find free actors on the Internet, which can save me a lot of money. After shooting the film, I will invite all the staff to dinner. My short film is long and the production content is not too big, therefore I don’t need a lot of staff. Last, I can upload my short film on many social media platforms to promote it and let more people see my work. (such as Tiktok, Youtube, Vimeo) Tiktok is a very popular app for contemporary people. The most important thing is that Tiktok can directly obtain profits from it without using a third party. I post my video and if I get a lot of followers and likes I get paid for it. When my short story is loved by the public, I can also make some film companies see it through the number of fans and the support of fans for my work. Maybe after they see it, they will want to cooperate with me and promote my work more.

The proof of concept helped me realize that as a filmmaker you need to write a story that is completely independent. This is like the ability, the condition and the idea that a filmmaker needs to have, which will help me prove that I have the ability to create a complete story and help me achieve my career goals.

3.The initiative post – This post is for you to research and write about proof of concept case study

‘The One Minute Time Machine’ (2014, Devon Avery) is a short film of about fiveminutes. They successfully ‘proved’ the concept of their long form narrative project through their short proof of concept project idea. For Devon Avery, his “proof of concept” is a short, fun, novel narrative that draws on the concepts of parallel space-time and time travel. The short film was “not only made as a stand-alone short film, but also as a complete narrative short film. Avery also proved that he has the ability to craft a complete story, a complete character journey.” (week2, p5) I think it’s important to choose a unique concept, and if you want to get noticed, you should look at what’s hot right now. Weinstein suggests that, “The content, the creativity, the innovation of the films, not only because they have high production values, but also because of the value of the films (2009,Weinstein,p20).” But following the crowd would definitely get me down because I wanted my film to be unique and new.

This example can help me to learn my own proof of concept idea development. For instance, not only I need to choose a unique concept, but I also had to find a clever twist. Writing a short film may become a feature film, but only if your short film is a completely self-contained story, not the opening three minutes of your dream. Whether I’m writing short drama, comedy, sci-fi, horror or anything else, telling a familiar story in a fresh way can get you noticed. Most of the best short films are based on solid stories, drawing on folklore, appeals or historical genres. Take these stories in bold new directions and you could win awards at short film festivals. I need to stick to one genre in terms of style and content and keep it simple.Weinstein argues that ,“Even with a short, never underestimate the power of the story.”

(2009,Weinstein,p14) When I’m writing a short film that will get noticed at festivals, it’s crucial to pick a genre and stick to it. Like a one-minute time machine (2014, Devon Avery)  The short film was only five minutes long, but it was cleverly conceived and struck a chord with many people. Weinstein suggests that, “It should be one scene, five minutes, and ideally comedic, because those program well at festivals.” (2009,Weinstein,p19)  There is always a lot of regret in life, want to adjust and correct in time. The man pressed the time machine so many times, just to chat up a woman. Is it love or lust? The heroine is also very special. After correcting the answer of the male major for so many times, she finds that she only wants the most direct answer and shows her most real desire.

I think every time the protagonists in the movies press the time machine, they’ve already died in a previous time. I believe there are parallel worlds. I think three dimensions are just what we humans can see, and what we can’t see is a space. Each choice we face splits into different parallel worlds, and we end up in each of them differently.
