A1/1 | Playing around with light
This video is an experimental film that was designed to capture light from various angles and shot to convey different perspective results. I used multiple basic visual literacies to shoot light, including panning, out of focus, depth of field, close up, tracking, the rule of thirds, zoom in and zoom out. Various ways or angles to capture light can be portrayed differently. For example, I found it interesting to add some out of focus in the video, it gives audiences a point of view of perspective of myself to shoot the frames as if there were a story to tell, it also exerts an effect to capture audiences’ interests, especially when it appears at the beginning of the video to draw audiences’ attention to continue watching and forces them to look deeper, also it creates a beautiful scene like in documentary. Moreover, I have learned that cinematography such as panning, tracking or tilting gives an understanding of the environment, it gives a deeper and outer look outside of details of what we are shooting, which is “light” in this video. Also, I like shooting light at night because it can always generate different looks in the frame depending on how much light and what colour of the light in a dark environment. For example, the beginning of the yellow light starts a warming feeling of the video, the next one is a white light that audiences can see the light growing bigger and bigger by opening the door, symbolizing the opening of a scene. Thirdly, the light of the mirror in a totally dark environment produces a blue feeling, also affects the stuff around it to fulfil the frame and bedding the next scene of a woman smoking a cigarette, also the long dissolve editing also helps connecting them. The last scene which is the smoking part, I used a depth of field to shoot the lighter and cigarette, to emphasize detail, with the smoke around it. The lighter is in the centre point of a frame with gradually zoom in to stress the light, the cigarette was shot with the rule of third because it is an action.
