Video Reflection:
The coronavirus has completely changed the way 2020 is going down in almost every aspect possible. People are losing jobs, markets are crashing and schools are navigating almost completely uncharted territory with online classes and lectures. From where I’m sitting at home I am just as confused as everyone else I know, and many others I don’t. This video was a really hard one for me to make, I spent so much time trying to understand what it is I wanted to say, but the more time I spent trying, the less I even knew. I figured I should just talk honestly on my experiences during this pandemic and in a climate changing world. I didn’t want to make a dramatic video but no matter how I recorded myself it always ended up sounding dramatic anyway, but despite this I had made a foundation of audio recordings and from there everything was a lot easier for me.
I wanted the video to have a very nostalgic feel, not just nostalgic for years past but for the time when people we actually allowed to be amongst one another. I tried to create this nostalgic feel through sourcing old super 8mm footage from youtube and footage from films I really enjoy. I especially enjoy the look of super 8mm film as everything is much warmer and life just looks a lot better, it reminds me really vividly of my own experiences with my friends and the warmth I feel with those memories. I also made the choice to include mostly pieces of footage that depict some aspect of nature and the environment, whether it be core to the shot or simply in the frame. I feel like these shots accompany my voiceover well as its directly relevant to the content.
When speaking on my experiences as a media practitioner I chose to include some photos that I have taken over the past few years and that I felt showed my passion for the medium. These photos make me feel optimistic for the future despite climate change and the impacts it’ll have.
I think media creation and creativity is still very important during this pandemic, and especially important during global warming. Media productions and creations have such a unique way of communicating different and important ideas to people. I think if asked, anyone could name at least one piece of media from any medium that has had a profound impact on them personally.
