My Method #2

Before I learn any cinema knowledge, I am so confused how to film a dialogue scene in a concrete way. I also usually consider the way of the shot change between the different people in a conversation.

This video mainly talks about the framing and angels, which we need think about when we film a dialogue scene. As the author mentioned that the most of dialogue scenes are begin with a wide shot for all people. The common and simplest way of two people’s conversation is with three camera angels:

*The wide shot of both sujects

*Two over the shoulder shots

*Move to each other’s shots

In general, when we doing the scene of train, we also use those shots to film the characters. This way to film a dialogue scene is simple, but it give use a natural and clearly way to show the talking situation between the characters. Also, this train exercise directly eliminates my confusion about how to design the camera position when two people are talking to each other. I think we did a good job about it.

Let’s come back to the video, the author also explained one of the important thing in framing, which is the rule of thirds. Rule of thirds is simply divides the screen to three equal parts vertically and horizontally. We need frame our subjects on those lines or in one of the third proportion screen. This rule can make the shot balance better.

Also, when we put a two people in one frame, putting the less important people in one third proportion of a screen is a balance way. Just like this:

But it is not rule we must apply in every scene, we are able to do some exception depending on concrete situation.

So this is a simple and common way to film a two people’s dialogue, but is there have any creative way to do it? And how to film a dialogue over two people? The question will never end, maybe I will think about it in next post.

Here is the video:

studio week 5 reflection

In Wednesday, we reviewed the scene we filmed last week. Actually, we got more thinking about that exercise. I already talked the importance of cooperation in filming process in last post. Each part of crew has their responsibility in each role. This post I want to focus on the editing and framing part.

In Wednesday class, robin reviewed our editing shot about the group exercise. We got some inspiration through watching others work. The first edited scene from other class, their shot cut in a fluent and tight way. Also, the shot, which they designed, are natural and interesting. However, when I edit the walking shot about scene one, I have not notice the tightness between different shots. I want emphasize the potential relationship between Charlie and Lucy, so I designed two times looking back from Lucy to Charlie. As a result, scene one seems a little long. The high angel shot seems a little weird, also due to the unsuitable length of time. The reason why I use this shot because I want to show the concrete situation about those three people. Viewers are able to use mniscient view to see what happening. The pov shot of Charlie also interesting, we used camera movement instead of his head movement.

As some classmates mentioned that we really need consider about the suitable rhythm of editing. Through this exercise I realized that I rally need improve this part, hoping next time I can do it better.

My Method#1

Cinema always being a fantastic art around the world, it is perfectly combine photography, music, performance, writing, costume, culture and so many other things together in a artistic way. The reason why I like film maybe because I am so interested in this blended art. Film through the camera and editing to deliver several of information to viewers, to some extent that information will affect them. Also, in fact, the life of people is consisted by different stories, film help us recorded story in a long time, even one day we already died, a good film will always exiting in this world. I think this is a quilt meaningful thing. I am afraid to say I want be a director, in my mind, director is a core of a film, it is require both professional knowledge, talent, communication ability and so on. I don’t think I can do it, at least now. So, now my goal is join it, join the filming process. I want clearly know how to film a scene, how to control the camera coverage. Also, I like editing. I want to edit the footages in a professional and creative way. Actually, those things are what I am keep studying in this semester.
