During Week 9 of Phantom Cinema, I was unfortunately overseas during our one class, (the other class did not take place due to the strike) which was the presentation at the Capitol theatre, providing a small audience with a narrowed down, specific outline of what our project is about, how we are going to achieve our assignment, and an example of how we are going to present our idea. Due to being overseas I obviously could not present which I made aware to my group weeks prior to the presentation so that we could organise a way in which it was possible for myself to contribute to the presentation. We made a powerpoint which I took part in, and also created a draft of the montage we are constructing for the assignment. The powerpoint consisted of storyboards, our broad outline, how we were going to present at the exhibition and submit our work, and a timeline. I was assigned to search for “Birth in cinema” footage for our montage video draft where I found scenes from Juno, The Addams Family, and Finding Nemo. All the scenes I found were to metaphorically represent the beginning of cinema, or the birth, hence scenes of pregnancy and women giving birth. I really enjoyed this idea because it not only portrayed the birth of cinema, but it demonstrates in a way that women are also the creators of cinema, just as much as men are. Women are much less acknowledged in the film industry so it is a small acknowledgement by including these birth scenes of women who have significantly contributed to the growth and adaptation of cinema.
From what my group had told me about the presentation, they said it all ran very smoothly, and everything seems to be on the right track. What was challenging about this week particularly was that I was unable to attend any classes, one from being away, and the other due to the strike. It was difficult to stay on track without the classes, however our group communication in our group chat allowed us all to maintain on top of everything this week.
