Media 4 – Observation 17/08/2016

An older chinese woman and a younger one have a verbal fight on a train in Chinese. Whether or not they are related is unclear. The two do not raise the voices to the point where others intervene, they stay on the cusp. Enough to make others aware of this verbal bout but no feeling of danger was established. At no point did this argument become heated, they just continued to exchange dialogue on this almost hour long bus ride. They get off the bus together, pausing their exchanges as they touch off their Mykis and thank the driver, the second they hop off the bus further dialogue can be heard as we drive away.

Filmic potential: Have subtitles highlighting that the “argument” is merely a misinterpretation due to the language being foreign when in fact they are talking about something. Needs to be shot in a way that the perspective can be seen from both the onlooker to begin with, exemplifying the misunderstanding with no subtitles and then cutting halfway through into a different perspective from one of the two involved, changing the context of the situation through the dialogue and new information.

Media 4 – Observation 17/08/2016

A mother and 2 sons walk up to the candy bar of a cinema on a friday night. Her voice raised as she begins to make an order, fighting over not only the sounds from the masses walking about but also of her two children locked in a childish conflict, the mother struggling to keep them in check turns around to silence them but to no avail. The customers standing behind her in the line begin to wear a face of judgement and disdain for this hindrance that may delay their own lives. The staff member struggles to receive a direct answer from the children as to what they want, the mother acting as an ambassador to relay the staffs questions. “What drink would you like?” “What size popcorn would you like.” The kids still wrapped up in their own world. A man behind can be heard telling the lady to hurry up. The mother erupts into a fit of rage as she scolds her children, making haste towards the cinema with no food or drinks. The children’s faces begin to turn sour as they realize they were the cause for their own punishment. The children enter the cinema with the mother, not another word is spoken.

Media 4 – Reflection 16/08/2016

In order to help provide context moving forward as we begin to start delving into viewing observation as something to be transposed into film we have been provided some examples via Email to help us attain perspective on this particular topic. The three examples from “Observations to film” will be useful references for the second half of the semester when we begin contextualising our own observations into film form. Specifically the second observation to film example titled: “No. 2 The Bilingual Exchange” while smaller compared to the other two in terms of how much has been written it feels very dense in the content being discussed and I can already visualize how it would transposed into film if it were to be adapted due to the descriptive writing used. All three of the examples have provided some insight in how we should be considering all our observations and that  providing a sense of vividness to our writing could help in the longterm.
