ASSIGNMENT #4: Festival Production – Week Seven

Week Seven Reflection

With a greater sense of direction and more planning for our festival in the past weeks, we have made lots of progress, such as figuring out more details on budgeting and venue use since we have the go-ahead to book The Capitol as our venue for two days of our festival, which really gave our event some solid ground! By achieving this critical step in our festival production, we had to update our budget based on security costs for The Capitol and get our website off the ground by purchasing a domain. We also created a timeline to help our team stick to certain goals and track our festival’s development. This gave us a better understanding of our progress in week seven and made our festival feel less overwhelming by providing a clear understanding of what we need to do and when we need to do it, rather than just being confronted with the intimidating idea of “we have to create a festival!” With these few but crucial festival details, we were able to plan and execute And Scene’s soft launch! The social media team created a promotional video to share across our social media channels, which helped spread the word about our festival and gain some traction and buzz. Our video featured the social media team putting up sticky notes around great places in the city like Melbourne Central and the State Library. I think the social media team did a great job with the video’s creativity, but I wonder if the video could have been more specific about who we are and what our festival will consist of, instead of simply saying we have an RMIT event coming up. Based on our target audience being RMIT staff, students, industry professionals, and the general public, I believe expanding on what we will offer could have been helpful. To create social media content tailored for our target audience, it might have been a good idea for us to create a communication strategy to better understand our communication goals and how we can reach our audiences, especially since we have so many different teams working on different parts of our festival. This could have been really valuable for our team and festival production as a whole (Rambousková, 2015).
