ASSIGNMENT #4: Festival Production – Week 11

Reflection Week 11

The reading of Chapter 8: “The Weeks Before the Opening” in The Curator’s Handbook proved to be extremely resourceful and helpful for the publicity of the And Scene Festival. The festival production has been very exciting, but I do have to admit that I felt overwhelmed or directionless with the tasks necessary to ensure my contributions to our festival were successful. There are many things needed to ensure our festival runs smoothly, and this reading gave me the insight and guidance needed, such as understanding how to maintain my mailing list or create a private view invitation. One concern I had around creating a VIP list was understanding whom to invite and also if we should maintain the offer of 2 free tickets per invite. I wanted to ensure that our festival had enough industry professionals or those included in other RMIT organizations, but did not know how many people I should send them to. I think this worry stemmed from the fact that I am expecting our opening night to reach its maximum capacity, considering the number of people immediately connected to its development, such as those in the studios and our And Scene class. While I am sure that many people will show up to our festival, maybe I should not have been so reserved with the people to send out PVs to. Additionally, I valued the insight from this chapter regarding designs for things like our press releases and PV invitations. I wanted to ensure both had captivating designs to match the great designs created by our design team but also enjoyed branching out and adding my own personal touches to them while still maintaining the And Scene branding. By referring back to the brand guidelines created by the design team, I was able to keep the designs consistent. I will definitely be referring to this chapter to help with additional publicity tasks like our second press release, which will include more detailed information on our festival programming and other exciting developments like what kind of food we will have catered or if we will have a band play opening night!
