ACTIVITY 2 – Filming / Editing the Lenny scene

In our second class of week two, we were split up into groups and we filmed the Lenny scene that we had done the mark up and shot lists for in the previous class. My group used my mark up for the scene which meant I had the director role. This was actually the first time I had filmed something narrative based at uni which meant it was also the first time using.. Read More

ACTIVITY 1 – Mark up scripts and shot lists

In our first class of week two, we completed an activity involving marking up a script and creating a shot list for the scene. I had never actually broken down a script and done the coverage for it before so this was a new skill being learnt. We first analysed some scenes in class, focusing on what shot types and angles were used and why, paying attention to how the shots, angles and lengths.. Read More

Outlook on Studio: Instinct & Intention

Write about what you want from this studio? What you think this studio is. Outline your goals and desires. Consider the Studio Prompt, Brief and Aims Despite Instinct and Intention not being my first preference, I think it will be really beneficial to learn and improve my editing abilities. I am enthused to expand my knowledge and skills of Premier Pro and editing as a whole. This studio will allow me to gain.. Read More

A5 pt2 Studio Review

Rolling with it – Melody Jorgensen  Melody has created an amazing piece of work featuring a Vietnamese bakery owner in Footscray as she speaks about the booming Bahn Mi culture, including the way the dish is made, its cultural significance, and its importance. I was intrigued to watch Melody’s final artefact as I saw it at the rough-cut stage and was keen to see the changes she made.  The colour grade throughout the.. Read More

10 KILOS HEAVIER

When Indie Bell was 13, her heart only beat once every two seconds. After drastically reducing her food intake, she was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa. Indie is one of many young Australians who struggle with disordered eating, exacerbated by the images portrayed on social media. “10 Kilos Heavier” is a short 5 minute documentary that charts Indie’s recovery and ponders the dangers of social media.   Production Credits: Featuring Indie Bell   A.. Reflecting on the Final Artefact

In my documentary, I aimed to create a compelling piece that gives insight into the life and mindset of Indie Bell, learning about her story, challenges with body issues, and her diagnosis and recovery from anorexia.  Rohan really helped me realise the importance of ‘playing my cards’ correctly throughout my piece and any future projects I work on. This particularly involved giving the audience a ‘breath’ after something had been said or shown.. Read More

Reflecting on Working Solo

Working solo worked very well for me. I feel as though I learned a lot as I had to be across all elements of putting together the documentary. This included planning, giving instructions, working a camera, filming, sound recording, editing, sourcing copyright-free footage, sorting through archive footage, sound mixing, and colour grading. My subject, Indie, is a close friend of mine and was therefore willing to speak openly to me about her story… Read More

Reflecting on representing the real world as part of a nonfiction media practice

Bill Nichols describes six modes of documentary: expository, participatory, observational, performative, poetic, and reflexive mode (Nichols, 1991).  My film ‘10 kilos heavier’ mainly features observational filming combined with some expository filming.  Observational filming aims to adopt a ‘fly on the wall’ approach by capturing realistic everyday life. The filmmaker will capture what’s happening in real life and not interfere, allowing real-life events to unfold, without the audience ever hearing or seeing them. Despite.. Read More
