blog #33: the fight that stopped the world

Never in my (nearly) 19 years have I seen a sporting event cause quite a stir like today’s, now infamous, Mayweather vs Pacquaio boxing match. The fight, which took place in Las Vegas, was attended by celebrities and regular folk, all attempting to catch a glimpse of the action. However, after having watched a bit of the fight myself, I was left puzzled as to what all the fuss was about – and it seems I wasn’t the only one. Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms all made a huge deal of the 12 round clash. Even most of my friends were boasting about the bets they’ve placed, the crew they’re watching the match with and their very strong feelings on a sport I didn’t even know they could correctly spell the title of until today.

What’s even more annoying to me, is that Floyd Mayweather is the world’s highest paid athlete. I’m not upset at this fact, I actually admire anyone who is out there hustling. What I don’t like is the fact that Mayweather is a woman beater. He has been repeatedly charged with assaults against his former-girlfriends and other women, and has pleaded guilty to several of these offences.

So while a good portion of the world donned their boxing gloves and rose-coloured glasses in support of Mayweather, there are many women at home scarred over the effects this man has had on them.
