Observations 3

  • An English couple, maybe in their late-20s, are in the line at ALDI in South Melbourne. They have lots of snacks (chips, chocolates, fruit) and plenty of alcohol. I stand behind them in line and wonder if they’re planning a party, or perhaps going camping. They are in a great mood, laughing at each other and chatting away. ALDI has a slightly grim demeanor, but the people inside always seem in good spirits. As the cashier scans all their food, they reach the end. He asks the woman for ID, who seems shocked but happily hands her ID over to him with a smirk to her partner. I had never seen an ID like it, it must’ve been European.
  • As I walk down Argyle Street in Fitzroy, on my daily route from my office to the post office to drop off the day’s supply of mail, I notice a man and a woman, quite young and trendy in general appearance (not uncommon for the area), standing near some pallets and a large dumpster. They are laughing together, the man crouching down and holding a camera to his face. They are having a photoshoot, the male photographer shooting the young woman. As I get closer and glance over at them, they ignore me, but seem to be aware of my, and the other pedestrians, presence. They awkwardly laugh at each other, the photographer trying to get the model to relax and ignore the goings on of the street. I wonder how the pictures will come out.
