Media 6 // Week 6 // Garder

I’m not sure if it’s the week six crunch-time or the content itself, but I truly struggled to stay engaged while completing this week’s reading. I’ve enjoyed the past weeks’ focus on the digital space, and I think this week’s step away from that has got me a little disinterested.

The chapter focuses on the ‘Five Minds For The Future” – as the book is aptly named – with these minds being the disciplinary mind, the synthesising mind, the creating mind, the respectful mind and the ethical mind. With these concepts broken down, I totally understand and agree with the way in which these frames of mind are beneficial for any professional, in any field. In the media industry, especially, I feel as though a high level of emphasis on the synthesising mind is an imperative trait, whereby multidisciplinary thinking and production is key in working with people in order to produce various content.

I found I best understood the key terms when applying them to my own work experience.

  1. The disciplinary mind: I have a keen interest and knowledge of web 2.o platforms as well as copywriting, creative direction and content curation… I guess this is all derived from a communications discipline (at least I’m in the right degree)!
  2. The synthesising mind: I consider myself to me a “multipotentialite”, whereby there multiple paths and disciplines I am passionate about and wish to pursue. This, in turn, assists me in honing in on my synthesising mind, allowing myself to be able to integrate, communicate, and achieve in across disciplines, in conjunction with one another.
  3. The creating mind: I am always pondering, wondering and contemplating bigger and better ways to achieve what may seem like the impossible!
  4. The respectful mind: I have a general love for people from all walks of life and believe my purpose is to be the best friend I can be. My love for people assists with dealing in both customer and client-facing industries.
  5. The ethical mind: I have too heavy a conscious to conduct myself in a way otherwise. As an employee, I understand that respect – and the way in which I behave – is a direct representation of myself and my company’s namesake. Especially as I am still relatively fresh to the industry, there’s no reason to tarnish a clean slate reputation.
