After dedicating the entire week to sharing our projects with everyone else in the class during Week 9, I needed to prepare for my presentation as soon as possible. More than anything, what I needed was people, and without them, I couldn’t do anything. The entire point of this project was to give my script to three other directors and see how they interpreted it differently. I was very lucky that soon after I finished my presentation the previous week, Ewan came up to me, and we discussed my project. This made it much easier for me to ask directors to volunteer. The directors who agreed to help me were Ewan, Kevin, and Hamish. What was even luckier for me was that Hamish had a friend in acting school, meaning he could ask more experienced actors to be in the film. With that settled, my next task was to set the filming date and location. At first, the filming date was unclear, so we moved on to scouting locations. Ewan, Kevin, Hamish, and I walked around various spots on campus that could potentially be the filming site for the project. I was so glad we did this. Not only did it give each of us a clear vision of what we wanted to film, but it also naturally highlighted the different interpretations they were going to use. For example, Kevin was quite keen on filming in a shadowed and narrow back alley of the university. This indicated that Kevin wanted to film the scene as if it were a crime film, which was already very different from my original vision of a comedy about a man who finds himself in an awkward situation. Hamish, on the other hand, was interested in filming on the rooftop, which had a great view and could make the scene more dramatic. Ewan seemed interested in more varied locations, but he suggested that for the sake of variety, he was willing to film inside a building. I was very thankful for this decision because just having a different location can bring an entirely different mood that can impact the genre. By the end of the week, I had everything I needed, including the shooting date, which we set for the following Friday. I was so happy with how well we handled this project together. Each director’s unique perspective not only enriched my script but also demonstrated the importance of collaboration and creativity in filmmaking. This experience reinforced my belief in the value of teamwork and the exciting possibilities that come from seeing different interpretations of the same material.
