#1 BEGIN is a short film featuring a member of a K-POP boy group (BTS), Jungkook, produced by their entertainment, Big Hit entertainment. It is the first of the 7 shorts that was published in You Tube for their 2nd full Album, WINGS.

Firstly, I am drawn into the use of light in this film. Throughout the whole film, there were so many different lighting conditions and sources (fire, lightning, sunlight), creating a lots of beautiful shadows which gives objects and setting in the film great depth of field. The contrast between the brightly lit object and the dark background draws the attention of the eye.

Then there is the “sound” aspect. In the beginning of the film is a short narration on a black screen, urging us to open all ears. From then on, the film makes listening an engaging experience. From the low grumbles and echoes of the room, the sudden cuts of piano and car crash sounds, the heavy breathing, to the soft singing and whistle in the background, all sounds match and more importantly, enhance the visual aspect of the film. I especially loved the rain sound that slowly gain in volume as the guy’s expression changes.

As this film is a part of a collection, interpreting the narrative on its own can be tricky. This video does evoke a mix of emotion, quite strongly, mostly that of sadness and confusion. The actor delivers such a great performance that it’s almost impossible not to sympathise with him.

Lastly, despite being only about 2 minutes long, this short film impress me through its many aspects. Not only is it visually aesthetic and audibly engaging, this film delivers great performance and narrative that seeks deeper understanding. This work of art has captivated me, everyone watching and most importantly the target audience, their fans (ARMYs).
