workshop: can I have your attention, please?

This week’s workshop started with a discussion on this week’s reading (part 2), as usual. Jeremy asked what our thoughts were, although unfortunately most of the class didn’t actually did the reading (I DID THOUGH!). So, having done it, I shared a little bit about my thoughts. Basically, I talked about how Tim posed a question of how people in this era spend so much time being distracted and I felt like it reflected me in a way, because it’s very relatable at a lot of times. I feel like time just slip away, the fact that these “attention merchants” successfully bring me to places that I don’t intend to go in the first place (e.g shopping ads) is just insane.

Moving on to the next part of the class, we were asked to do a group exercise. This time, we’re to record a 1-3 minute audio with the title “Can I have Your Attention, please?”. The groups are those for our PB4, which means that I’m paired up with Aria, and because Kate didn’t show up, that’s only the both of us. Anyhow, we’re briefed on the instructions before diving to it. We had 15 minutes to discuss on what to do before actually going out to record. We basically came up with the idea to do a fiction, and also, since we’re not in the mood for something serious, we wanted to make a funny one! Thus, we wrote a short script, and just got out of the class to shoot, I mean record.

First of all, we wanted to record the narration, so we tried to find a quiet space in the building to no avail, because there were always some sort of noise at some point. Until we saw an elevator and ding! Why not do it inside the elevator?! So yeah, we basically got inside, didn’t press any button and just recorded there. If there’s anything that I’ve learnt today is that elevator is an awesome place to record (the audio came out so well!).

When we’re done, we went outside the building to record some atmospheric sound, which I didn’t use in my final audio because I don’t think it’s serving any purpose. We then went on to record what I think is “the star” of this audio, which is the dialogue! We recorded a few times before we actually got it right, but nevertheless, worth it! Lastly, we went back to the elevator to record phone notification sound as well as typing sound to include in the final audio. Though recording inside an elevator means that at some point, there will be people using them, so it’s only good for a short recording.

After we finished, we got back to class, moved the files into our laptops and was given some time to edit. Then, we’re asked to stop working on those and move on with our PB4. Me and Aria discussed on our topic, which is “Nudity and Female Objectification in Media” and spent time figuring out what to do next. We also had our “Collaborative Contract” read by Jeremy and fortunately, it was all fine, so there’s one thing done! YAY! Lastly, before the class ended, we also got some feedback and ideas, which were really helpful.

Finally, here’s my edited version of our audio exercise!

Enjoy!! 🙂
