memrise

A wonderful day everyone! So, these days I’ve been into this language learning website (also an app), which many of you may have heard or try, Memrise. Although I just found out literally a few minutes ago that it also offers a lot of other categories, from maths&science to entertainment. Anyhow, I’ve tried the application a few times back in my country, but it’s not until these days that I’m using it quite regularly. I only use it to learn languages, thus I’ll share my experience with it as a language learning application.

Memrise is really simple to use, with clean interface and easy functions. It offers a lot of languages, or can I say numerous, ranging from Asian to European to Middle Eastern to sign languages! Although I’m only learning Asian languages, which are Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The courses are also very diverse since every memrise users can create a course for any language.

Although courses are made by different people, they basically all operate in the same way. How it works:

  • Introduces a new word/phrase (some with audio)

  • Provide exercise in the form of multiple choice questions within a time limit (text, audio or video of natives saying the word/phrase)

  • Test our writing skill in the language we’re learning, which may need you to change your input language. (also within a time limit)

  • Every correct answer that’s done within the time limit will be rewarded with points as well as your flower growing. (this process repeats until the flower fully blooms)

  • After some time has passed, say a day, the word/phrase will be re-tested to refresh our memory

I find the techniques effective, as it combines text, audio and video in a fun way. It makes sure that you have already memorized the words before moving on to a new one, it’ll also combine new and old words together in the exercises so we won’t forget the previous learnt words. (Although sometimes it may be too repetitive)

As for the features, I like that there is an ignore option so I can choose what to learn as there are words that I already know or in the cases when I find the word showing up too many times. Also, as you do the exercises, you get points for right answers. That way, we can compete with our friends or simply boast our achievements in the leader board for people to see! It’s a great motivation in my opinion. Not to mention, it’s so convenient as it also comes in the form of an application a.k.a phone-friendly!

In the end, I hope this post is beneficial and gives useful information, especially for those of you trying to learn a language but couldn’t find a great website yet! I highly recommend this website/app to everyone! Also although I have yet explored other categories, its not simply a place to learn language, so if you’re interested in learning something else, it might just be worth to check out! (I’m not sponsoring ok hahaahaha)
