Leos Carax’s Holy Motor is a film that makes me confused——I can’t find any meaning. This film is about an actor who plays several roles from day to night,but there are no cameras,director or spotlight in the whole movie, I wonder if he’s just acting or experiencing different life.The sudden end of the film is confusing me, it seems that we already know everything,or maybe nothing.In fact, I don’t like it anyway. It’s so weird.

This film as a‘Experimental Film’ it deliberately blurred the theme and more focus on the poetic, it even doesn’t have a specific story, maybe the purpose of the whole movie is just to express the offbeat idea of director.We may also call it as an ‘Art Film’. It is worthy to discussing the artistry of experimental rather than the film itself, it is more meaningful (or meaningless) than the commercial film, it has no specific direction to the plot,or even without the story,which is mean every second in this film is new and original(or confused ).BUT, because of these characteristics,it is destined to face the extremes assessment.It can be praise as an interesting,outstanding and innovative film,on the other hand, someone may feel that experimental film is meaningless,vulgar(sometime it contains strongly sexual or violence cues e.g Rape direct by Yoko Ono Lennon/John Winston Lennon) and strange.

Actually, Experimental Film is:

· Without a specific script,no narrative structure
· Cut style frantic and fast
· Subjective and Psychological
· Try different expressionist method(e.g.Surrealism,Intuitionism,Expressionism)
· Create, Speculation subjective forms
· Emphasize the emotional expression
· Thinking ahead,Enlightening(e.g. Political,Sexual)

Experimental film has different views and different expression, the artistic conception and philosophy which is contains by a good experimental film are far more than the scope of commercial films can convey, but, on the other hand, because the different expression the experimental film will be rejected by some people. For example,I don’t like ‘Holy Motor’ because the strongly ,even if this is a good film, experimental film has it unique charm, I am also very interested in it.
