It has been a huge learning experience being selected as a finalist in the HP ‘Bend the Rules” short film pitching competition. We had around two weeks to write, produce and post-produce the four minute film for distribution through HP’s YouTube account online.
I took on the editing myself as there wasn’t much time to source an editor. After one day recovery after filming, I started editing the film. There were some minor continuity issues with the footage, as halfway through one conversation there were two actors in the background, when they were meant to be in another location, so in order to solve that problem, I ended up zooming in on the footage to eliminate them from the frame. It is not the most ideal situation as it reduces the quality of the image, however as we shot the film in HD we didn’t lose much quality. After the draft edit was done I consulted my peers for feedback.
I was given an extension on the deadline, which actually proved detrimental because this delayed the colour grading and audio mastering process, and my partner Amitoze and I ended up rushing to get the film completed. The tight deadline did make be focus however, and I learned a lot about Adobe Speed Grade and Adobe Audition in the process. This has already proved useful as I used these skills to produce my Project Brief 3 video and I will no doubt use these skills in the future.
I have also learned a huge lesson about time management, and understanding how long certain tasks take to complete is essential to time management. You can watch our film Mel and Rana below.
