Over the almost past three years of my media studies, I have been involved in a variety of studios, with most projects involving video editing. Personally, I feel like my understanding of video editing is probably a little deeper at the moment than it was when I first started studying media, but I still need to elevate my professional skills compared to media professionals.
When I looked at the list of studios for this semester, I was immediately drawn to the name of this studio as it was a straightforward statement of the studio’s focus on exploring a wide variety of editing methods to achieve the best possible results. This studio provides me with a thorough understanding of the film industry and how a film can be produced from scratch. Although I may not want to pursue a career in the film industry in the future, I believe that film editing is a fundamental thing and proficiency in editing is essential for any media professional.
From my perspective, video editing can be used as a powerful tool as it conveys emotion, sometimes even without any narration. Through this semester of study, I want to strengthen my visual communication skills by utilising different camera angles and shot sizes to enhance a strong visual delivery of the narrative. In order to communicate with viewers effectively, I need to edit videos in a more creative way. Specifically, I want to dive into commercial editing because this editing style offers strong delivery in regard to emotions. For example, a successful commercial is often constructed with strong visual elements such as a close-up of the product, which creates an unforgettable visual impact on viewers and achieves the best publicity. Also, I want to spend more time experimenting with jump cuts as it seems to be a vital element in the current trend of short videos. Hopefully, by the end of the semester, I will have some creative projects backed up by adequate professional theoretical knowledge, and I can put them together into a portfolio to showcase my professional skills to potential employers or clients.
