Short Film Review (OVERDOSE), By James Paul

Overdose is a short film which I came across on Vimeo. It is highly surreal and thought provoking piece, that strikes more as a work of art rather than a short film. The films content is almost bowie-esque in nature; its odd, freakish, out-of-this-world, yet surprisingly intriguing. The oddity of the film drew me into it, and as the film progressed it all started to make sense of itself. Overdose isn’t some abstract, off-the beaten track 1 minute clip, but rather a piercing narrative that highlights the vices of humanity.

In terms of its technical components; that of which includes its sound design and the vivid imagery, convey is meanings and messages in a visually impacting way. The use of text within the film suggests the intentions of the filmmaker. Words like ‘Eat Junk’ and ‘Waste’ frequently appear. The text provokes a sensation of curiosity, which drew myself into the film the further I watched it. One other thing to note is the use of sound design within the film itself. Stylistically the sound represents a ominous rhythmic repetition. The sound almost creates a sense of urgency with its rather fast BPM (Beats per minute).

Expressionism and surrealism is used extensively within the film. Surrealism to me is a form that can create a whole range of feelings and reactions. In terms of art for instance, surrealist painters such as Frida Kahlo and Picasso where a lot of my inspirations when I studied art in year 12. Moreover, the amount expressionism inspires a radical and wild emotion to me. As a filmmaker it is important for me to understand these aspects of genre, especially when dabbling in the experimental film making form. In a sense, taking inspiration form these genres and the artists whose work reflect this genre would effectively give the maker a deeper sense of creative integrity

Overdose is a strong example of expressive experimental film-making, with its intentions used to send a strong world-view message to the viewer.
