IM: Reading – Plotting The Database
Here are 5 points I took away from this weeks reading that I found useful.
- A plot captivates the passive audience, taking them on a singular, linear ride.
- If we extend a plot/narrative into a database, we get more ways to involve ourselves in that narrative. More ways to view it, changes to the structure and timing; it allows us to become active audiences.
- “Navigation is never neutral; it is always the expression of a set of cultural assumptions and controls” – Johanna Drucker
- Graphic devices are important in the telling of a story, whether it be the table of contents of a book to inform you of the length and structure of the story you are about to embark upon or the various graphics on a website or blog that frame the content.
- Using grids of non-linear imagery can be embedded within a story to poise questions about character, time, location, emotion; basically anything really.
