Film/TV: Blow Up

In the scene from the film Blow Up, the director (as all director’s do) has the challenge of working with camera, framing, focus and blocking of actors.

  • The framing of the house is literally used to frame some of the shots. The framework on the interior of the apartment set is used as a tool for the actors to work around to give their characters’ more depth than they would in a bare room.
  • The framing is an obstacle not only the actors get to work with, but the camera must consider. Framing up the shots around the wooden framework to keep both characters clean while in shot.
  • The Camera must track the actors as the walk around the studio apartment, while keeping in mind their movements may slow when they have to work around the wooden framing.
  • The focus of the shots is always on the actors, but by framing them within the confines of the wooden framing, the shots often allow for a second focus on the shapes the studio equipment and apartment framework create within the shot.
