IM: Adaptations
I just looked at the definition of Integrated Media on wikipedia (it’s not a term used often, as beyond the first 4 links, it was all RMIT stuff). It says that it links content across multiple forms of media. This got me thinking about adaptations.
Adaptations of books, TV series, Videogames, comics, graphic novels, short films. The Hunger Games is a property that spans over books, movies and videogames. Integrated? Hmmm.
Actually, here’s a better example. Marvel Cinematic Universe. 9 films and counting, one TV series and 6 in development, videogames, short films, graphic novels and comic books. All related, all bound by the same rules and world. Possibly the most integrated media of all time. It’s all connected through multiple media forms. Each form adds a new element to the world. The movies define the overall story and world, the TV show builds upon the world, the short films fill in gaps within the films and tell new stories, the games add an interactive element to it. There are apps as well, that flesh out the world even more, and allow interactivity, like the JARVIS app, that allows you to use Tony Stark’s personal computer assistant as a SIRI-like program on your phone.
Adapting stories and ideas into new media forms is what integrated media is all about.
