Reflection week #3

This weeks exercise was what I thought to be the most interesting one yet. This was my first time at using colour on the Sony EX3 cameras so I was a little nervous going into it. I was a lot better at setting up and recording camera descriptions compared to the earlier weeks. The exercise set was to have a panning shot that tracked a subject moving. I planned exactly how the shot begin and end. Which consisted of one of my group members strolling passed the frame, being tracked all the way to their seat. Once sat they talked with another group member and then that group member left. I did not expect for the other group member to leave at the end so I was caught off guard but did not want to cut so I kept recording. This quick reflex I thought showed me improvement from when I first started the tracking exercise as it was a lot smoother and free flowing. The feedback that I got from Robin is that I should take time when composing my shot, to make sure that what is being shown as well as what is being hidden is intentional. Making sure that head room is not excessive in the frame and that half of an object that the subject is interacting with is not cut off. I also learned not to be scared to move the camera on both the X and Y axis of the tripod so that my shots look more thought out as well as not limiting myself. That week I also learned how to white balance the Sony EX3 cameras. This worked well to teach me how to use this specific camera but then also helped me generally since I hadn’t quite grasped the importance of white balancing before shots. Making me think more about the colours being shown and how the light being let into the iris alters that. If I were to do exercise 3 again I would take a lot more time planning out my shot beforehand, now that I am noticing these new things in the frame. For my observations this week they came to be a mix of more explanation without making it read like a diary entry as well as still keeping that description. Since I observed more interesting things this week I found that I did not have to make up for it with heavy adjectives. This week made me more aware of what I shoot thanks to the exercise which is something that I have already seen makes what I shoot more interesting to view.
