Reflection Week #1

For the first week of class I was quite surprised that we were jumping straight into things. It caught me off guard pleasantly since my main worry about joining a new studio was that it would be mainly theory based and that I would not be able to actually make anything. In the class I stated that I hope to learn the skills for how to create interesting and engaging films of observations to better improve my film making and writing skills. The writing exercise that we started doing worked really well to get me into the rhythm of noticing observations. The feedback that I received told me that the observations that I wrote were too much like a diary entry. This criticism changed my perspective on how to write my observations so that they became more descriptive and more like something I can visualise in my mind while I read it. We got out the cameras in class, cameras that I have never used or seen before. At first, this was quite intimidating since it seemed like we were going right into the deep end. However we started simple and just worked at shooting a simple medium shot. Something that I found really interesting about this exercise was that we were shooting in black and white. This confused me in the beginning but then I soon realised that by shooting in that format we were able to learn how to adjust the contrast and exposure on the cameras. This is something that I have never thought of before but I am glad that I gained that new perspective from that exercise. After reviewing both the colour and black and white versions of what was shot I noticed that the colours looked strange. Even though the exposure and contrast was high-quality certain colours blending in with each other or looked weird since we did not shoot it while having colour in the viewfinder. The exercise and class equipped me with skills for how to both start my writing observations journey as well as working as a sturdy introduction to using the Sony EX3 cameras.
