The Semiotic Tradition of Analysis

The semiotic tradition of analysis is drawn from the semiotic codes that are procedural systems of related conventions for correlating signifiers and signified in certain domains. Also there are codes that provide a framework within which signs make sense: and are broken up into social codes, textual codes and interpretative codes. As all this information scattered my brain, we were given a photo of a child being thrown into the pool and my partner and I found that the meanings were:

  1. That smiling had a denotation of “smiling” and the connotation was happiness
  2. Cursive writing didn’t have a denotation, just purely that the group of words means what the words mean. Where as the connotation was that the product is classy and luxurious.
  3. The child is framed higher in the photo to symbolise the joy of being a kid and the level of happiness you endure as a child, could be said that its also portraying the father enjoying throwing him up and in a sense watching him “fly”.
  4. Lastly, the repetion of blue throughout the photo is a major factor to evoke a summer/chill vibe, and that the photo isn’t a real photo (it has been photo shopped, since the fathers hands are way to high and spread apart).
