Week 2

This week we started thinking about what photographer or famous Instagram individual that we would be talking about to the class in our 2 minute pitch. I’ve thought of a guy named James J Robinson, who I know through a friend in Melbourne who takes photos predominately in the night. Who did his degree in Film and TV at Swinburne University, and is now the co founder of aevoe an international photography brand working with businesses such as SONY, Emporium Melbourne, Adidas and Footlocker. He shoots with an analogue 35mm film and photography camera and can deliver some crisp and classy photos.

As said in Fridays class (in the pitch), you can see how Robinson employs lots of pink filters and pink shadows as a motif which I think conveys tranquillity or serenity. As if these characters in the photo are ‘one with their environment’. This brought me to the idea of photographing my Asian friend in Chinatown, a place where he feels at home and is a place that’s similar to countries like Japan and China since they are always lit up and colourful. Robinson also likes to use reflections, neon colours, expressive lighting and playing around with the foreground and background. Making sure there is hierarchy in contrasting colours and negative space within the frame. Robinson also has this overwhelming sense of rawness that I love, making sure the relationship between the visual objects, facial expressions and the camera lens provides an emotional effect on the viewer. Sometimes even reflecting this idea of human art that gives us a sense of intricacy.
