Wizard of Oz Phenomenon

In the first cinema screening we watched the much talked about film since its release called The Wizard of Oz. As I enjoyed to reminisce in the trials and tribulations that Dorothy had to go through on her journey to Oz, I found that the film had a much deeper meaning than what originally met the eye in the past. The use of colour in the land of Oz versus the sparse land of Kansas filtered through sepia, evokes that Oz is the more powerful, magical, fun, and exciting land. Contrasting both lands against one another through colour gives the audience a sense of separation and identity. Whilst watching, I also saw something that I had never picked up; that the tin man, lion and scarecrow are at the 3 handy man workers at the farm. Portraying that she Is always with friends in both Kansas and Oz, and that they are always there for her loved one, Dorothy. Upon listening to the music and form of the film, I found that the score is used to increase or decrease the emotions and the level of sad/scared nature to happy/cheerful nature. For example, when she meets the scarecrow she is happy and the violins crescendo and piano is in the high notes, until she finds that this scarecrow is alive and is unsure about his vibe. The music then changes to lower notes and creates a dark gloomy sound, which illustrates to the audience that Dorothy emotion has changed. The effective use of film form and editing has successfully created a sophisticated product that has more than meets the eye to a generic individual.
