For week two we were required to interview someone we met but didn’t know very well which was a perfect opportunity for me to interview Jack!
Describe how you made the work?
I started my film by voice recording my interview with Jack. When the interview was complete I cut and edited the audio and converted it to an mp4 file. I used an application called wave.video which assisted me in creating a subtitled video. This app also gave me the option to change the layout and I implemented a feature which placed my text into a laptop format. I wanted to encapsulate the idea of social video. By using a laptop layout acts a feature where people watch their own social videos. In a sense its watching a social video inside a social video. I then exported the subtitled video and cut and edit further. I added some additional visuals and incorporated a soundtrack.
With trying a different approach technically, what issues did you face?
Through trying to create a different form of video gave me different obstacles to overcome. One issue I faced with the application was that some of the words it translated differed from what Jack actually said. I decided to keep it in the film to show the trial and error but while watching the text read on, some sentences do not make sense. Another issue I came across was the lack of knowledge I had using IGTV. As the video I wanted to upload was longer than 60 seconds, the approach for uploading needed to be adapted. My video had a horizontal form and when I attempted to upload the first few times it came up as a portrait video. Through communicating with other students I was able to overcome this obstacle and post the video correctly.
What worked well?
Although some of the text came across nonsensical, I loved the way the subtitles came out. The highlighting of each word spoken really helped tune into what was being said. I liked the additional visuals used to coincide with Jack’s answers and how it tells a story. The soundtrack I chose was an underwater soundtrack to mirror the topic of surfing which is spoken throughout the video. Jack has quite a calming tone of voice so I wanted to match his tone to the soundtrack. I thought the use of subtitles was a creative way to share my video in a way which answers the prompts.
What could you have done better?
There is always room for improvement when speaking about self edited projects. I believe I could always work harder on my visuals and to create a video that is inventive and different. I could experiment more with sound and sound effects as well to improve my film as well. Even asking more detailed questions to receive different answers could be another aspect to try.
