Platform Video – Week Three Practice Analysis

What is the title of the video you have chosen to analyse (can you provide a link?)

I decided to choose the video “Preparing for Triennial 2020” as it is an introductory video into the exhibition which coincided with the reopening of the NGV gallery.

Preparing for NGV Triennial 2020

Who is the practitioner? Who made the work?

NGV is the practioner of this video. The National Gallery of Victoria holds some of the most exquisite works and creates amazing exhibitions that invites non-art lovers as well as art die hards.

Briefly describe the content of the video.

The video introduces its audience to Tony Ellwood Am, director as NGV who walks us through the preparation of the exhibit. He discusses the timing of reopening the gallery to the public with the presenting of Triennial. He briefly walks through artists where the video leads us to listen to Tom Matelli who discusses the importance of experiencing real life art now due to the relationship people have with social media now more than ever.

Briefly talk about the form of the video.

NGV provided s short form video of a duration of 1 minute 36 seconds to briefly describe the depth of preparation that goes into its exhibition. It includes interview style filming with Tony and Tom which allows the audience to really understand the meaning behind the exhibition. The video is quite formal in relation to how Tony articulates the preparation of Triennial. In addition, the visuals are high quality, filmed with a professional camera and uses pan shots that show glimpses of artwork in a horizontal fashion. Using a wide angle shot assists in emphasising the work and shows details of artworks.

What makes this work experimental? How is it different? Think about the content and form, and the methods used to make it?

Providing a short form video rather then a 3-5 minute film provides a short and sweet insight for its audience. While more information could be put into a longer duration, the choice of a short form film keeps the ideas simplified. Using the Director of the NGV Gallery authenticates the information provided as well as an artist in the exhibition. It encourages the audience to create a relationship prior to seeing the work which is something I enjoyed. While experimental wouldn’t be the term I’d use to describe this video, professional is closer to the prosperity of the film. However an experimental element of the video is the sound track. The video is matched with a very dramatic soundtrack behind which differs from the way physical galleries feel. Having a build up of music combined with the walkthrough of the gallery creates a sense of excitement.
