For week one, I interviewed a student who was familiar to me. Luckily enough, Tomas Barnes was in my Media 1 class last year hence my decision to interview him.
Describe how you made the work?
For this video sketch I chose to use the platform of zoom, as face to face classes hadn’t commenced yet, zoom was an accessible outlet to use to communicate. Through an interview process, I screen recorded Tom’s responses where he answered questions relating to his favourite social videos.
With trying a different approach technically, what issues did you face?
While zoom is a great communication device, many issues prevailed within our interview. Simple technical issues like poor wifi problems started from the get-go which made communication extremely static and hard to hear. Being reliant on the internet offers unpredictable obstacles and can change times of shooting and the quality of visuals and sound. Other issues I found was simplifying the video into a short form where it could fit the instagram 60 second format. Due to this I found a lot of content was cut short and lacking a bit of substance and most likely seemed short to watch. To overcome this issue, I would post my video in the format of an IGTV which can be longer durations.
What worked well?
Once wifi issues were sorted out, Tomas spoke fluently and was very precise in what he said. This made editing the actual video very simple and easy for me. I answered the question of what his favourite platform to consume social video while combining it with what he is currently interested in, in under 60 seconds. I experiments with some colour tones of the film and also including side visuals to incorporate the social video that was being discussed.
What could you have done better?
I definitely could have added more visuals or a sound track behind the video to make it more engaging and aesthetic. Even adding film effects or something to encourage someone to listen and watch. As it was my first video sketch I think I kept it quite simple rather then detailed. I can definitely attempt to experiment more with visuals and sound next time. Additionally, I could research more into the interviewees answers and provide visuals of social videos they used as examples.
